2002 Corvette buyer's guide: the 405 hp Z06, the coupe and convertible, the wheels to check and 2026 prices
Published
The magnesium wheels were supposed to be gone for 2002. GM’s launch papers of June 2001 said the option was no longer available on the coupe or convertible. Then in March 2002 a notice to Chevrolet dealers, reposted on Corvette Action Center’s forum (opens in new tab), made the N73 wheel orderable again: the same wheel as 2001, at a reduced $1,500 (it had listed at $2,000 for 2001), and only while the supply lasted. Corvette Action Center counts 114 cars that got a set, 36 coupes and 78 convertibles. Most buyers paid $1,295 for polished wheels instead, and those are what to get down on one knee for before you buy a 2002 C5 (1997–2004) Corvette.
The bigger news was under the Z06’s hood. Two engines, three models: 350 hp LS1 (coupe, convertible), 405 hp LS6 (Z06), the Z06 up 20 hp on the 2001. It’s a C5, not a C6: the C6 arrived for 2005, and the Stingray name skipped the C5 and returned on the C7. By NHTSA complaints per car built, 2002 is the second-cleanest C5 year after 2003, and the C5 buyer’s guide names those two the best of the run. So far in 2026, stock 2002s have sold on Bring a Trailer for a median $28,000 for a Z06, $20,750 for a coupe or convertible.

Section 01
The coupe and convertible: small changes, same 350 hp
GM’s list of what was new (kit, PDF pages 9 and 10, in this site’s manual library) is mostly about the Z06 (see The 405 hp Z06 year). For the other two bodies it runs to five lines:
- Stereo. A CD radio became standard, and the cassette deck came only with the 12-disc CD changer. A 2002 with a cassette in the dash should have the changer too: 4,210 cars had both.
- Cooler case. The automatic’s transmission cooler case went from stainless steel to cast aluminum.
- Links. Aluminum front stabilizer bar links on Z51 cars, as on the Z06.
- Paint. Electron Blue replaced Navy Blue Metallic, and Dark Bowling Green Metallic was dropped.
- Wheels. The magnesium option was dropped, until the March 2002 dealer notice brought it back.
The rest carried over from 2001: the LS1’s 350 hp and 375 lb-ft (360 with the automatic), the gearbox ratios, standard second-generation Active Handling (GM’s stability control), the run-flat tires and tire pressure monitor, and the optional head-up display, which projects speed and other readouts onto the windshield. A 2002 and a 2001 coupe differ only in the details listed in Glovebox codes and VIN digits.
GM’s 2003 kit shows what a 2002 buyer goes without: the 50th Anniversary Edition, Magnetic Selective Ride Control, a silver “50” emblem front and rear on every car, and fog lamps, sport seats, a power passenger seat and dual-zone air made standard on the coupe and convertible. In return the 2002 keeps the older fuel system (the new one arrived partway through 2003, as the C5 guide explains) and the last Pewter paint on a C5.
Section 02
The 405 hp Z06 year
For 2002, GM took the LS6 from 385 hp to 405 hp at 6,000 rpm and from 385 to 400 lb-ft at 4,800, matching the peak of the 1990–1995 ZR1’s LT5, in GM’s words. GM’s engine release lists how: a camshaft that opens the valves about 0.7 mm further, hollow-stem valves (sodium-filled on the exhaust side), a freer airbox and mass airflow sensor, and the two small “pup” catalytic converters deleted with the emissions rating kept. That’s 71 hp per liter from a pushrod V8.
GM’s Z06 release (opens in new tab) quoted 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the quarter mile in 12.4 at 116 mph, against 4.0 seconds and 12.6 at 114 mph for the 2001, and GM’s validation release gave a 171 mph top speed. On the 2.2-mile road course GM used to validate the car, ride and handling engineer Mike Neal said, the 2002 was “half a second faster” than the 2001, and the testing showed it needed a new clutch. It got one with 7 percent more clamp load, plus revised rear shock valving, new high-performance front pads, cast aluminum front stabilizer links, cast-spun wheels in place of forged ones (same design, 1.3 lb lighter as a set) and a standard head-up display. Electron Blue took Speedway White’s place among the five Z06 colors.

Bowling Green built 8,297 Z06s, 23 percent of the year. Every one has the M12 six-speed, a 3.42 axle, a fixed roof and Goodyear Eagle F1 SC tires that aren’t run-flats; the owner’s manual’s answer to a flat is the sealant kit and at least 26 psi. There’s no tire pressure monitor. One trade for the new pads: GM bulletin 070303 (2003) covers low-speed brake noise and extra dust on 2002–2004 cars with the high-performance front linings. The Z06 across all four years, magazine tests and the valve spring study included, is in the C5 Z06 guide.
Section 03
Coupe, convertible or Z06: how 35,767 were built
Bowling Green built 35,767: 14,760 coupes, 12,710 convertibles, 8,297 Z06s, or 41, 36 and 23 percent. GM gives curb weights of 3,246 lb coupe, 3,248 lb convertible, 3,118 lb Z06, with 51/49 front-to-rear weight distribution on the first two and 53/47 on the Z06 (specifications, PDF page 12). The coupe carries 24.8 cubic feet under its glass hatch, the convertible 13.9 and the Z06 13.3.
Gearboxes. The automatic was standard on the coupe and convertible and went into 18,917 of them, 69 percent; the $915 six-speed went into 8,553. Add the Z06s and 16,850 cars are manuals, every one on a 3.42 axle. The automatics split almost evenly between the standard 2.73 axle (9,271) and the optional 3.15 (9,646).
Prices new. Corvette Action Center lists $41,855 for a coupe, $48,380 for a convertible and $50,555 for a Z06, without saying whether destination is included, and no GM price list for 2002 turned up for this guide. For scale, GM’s 2001 prices with destination were $40,475, $47,000 and $47,500.
Section 04
GM’s 2002 numbers, and where its papers disagree
| 2002 Corvette | Coupe and convertible | Z06 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | LS1, 5.7-liter (5,665 cc) V8, aluminum block and heads, 10.1:1, VIN code G | LS6, 5.7-liter V8, 10.5:1, VIN code S |
| Power and torque | 350 hp; 375 lb-ft manual, 360 lb-ft automatic | 405 hp at 6,000 rpm, 400 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm |
| Gearbox ratios | 4L60-E automatic 3.06, 1.63, 1.00, 0.70; six-speed 2.66 to 0.50 | M12 six-speed 2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, 0.84, 0.56 |
| Wheels | 17 x 8.5 in front, 18 x 9.5 in rear; cast standard, forged polished optional | Cast-spun, 17 x 9.5 in front, 18 x 10.5 in rear |
| Tires | Goodyear Eagle F1 GS run-flats, P245/45ZR-17 and P275/40ZR-18 | Goodyear Eagle F1 SC, P265/40ZR-17 and P295/35ZR-18 |
| Brake rotors | 12.6 in front, 11.8 in rear, with ABS | GM lists one size for all three |
| Size | 179.7 in long, 73.6 in wide, 104.5 in wheelbase | Same |
| Fuel tank, oil | 18.5 gal (70.0 L); 6.5 qt with filter | Same |
| EPA, today’s method | 16 city, 23 highway (automatic); 17 city, 26 highway (manual) | Not rated separately |
Engine, chassis and size are from GM’s specification pages; tank, oil and the wheel nut torque, 100 lb-ft (140 N·m), from the owner’s manual; EPA from fueleconomy.gov. GM’s papers disagree in four places:
- Displacement. The 2002 kit lists both engines at 350 cu in (5,665 cc). GM’s 2000 and 2004 kits give the same engine as 346 cu in, which is what 5,665 cc works out to, and the 2004 guide uses that. The 2002 kit’s 350 rounds it up.
- Tank and rpm. A later capacities page in the 2002 kit gives the tank as 18.0 gallons and the LS1’s peak at 5,200 rpm, against 18.5 gallons and 5,600 rpm on its specification pages. The owner’s manual says 18.5, and the manual wins.
- Octane. The kit asks for 93. The owner’s manual recommends 91 or higher for best performance and allows 87 with slightly reduced acceleration.
- Wheels. The 2002 kit calls the standard painted wheel cast and the polished one forged. GM’s 2000 kit called the 2000’s standard wheel forged (the 2000 guide has it), and no GM paper found says when that changed.
The manual’s parts list names ACDelco 41-974 spark plugs (OEM) gapped at 0.060 in and lists no battery; the battery guide covers what a C5 takes.
Section 05
What 2002 buyers ticked: options and paint
Corvette Action Center’s production page (opens in new tab) carries Bowling Green’s 2002 option counts, with prices where it lists them. RPO codes are GM’s regular production option codes, and every one below is on GM’s RPO list:
| RPO | Option | Price | Built |
|---|---|---|---|
| MM6 | Six-speed manual (coupe, convertible) | $915 | 8,553 |
| Z51 | Performance handling package | $395 | 6,106 |
| F45 | Selective Real Time Damping (electronically adjusted shocks) | $1,695 | 4,773 |
| QF5 | Polished forged wheels | $1,295 | 22,597 |
| N73 | Magnesium wheels | $1,500 (dealer notice) | 114 |
| UV6 | Head-up display (standard on the Z06) | Not listed | 23,741 |
| N37 | Power telescoping steering column | $350 | 23,146 |
| C2L | Dual roof package, coupe | $1,200 | 5,079 |
| CC3 | Transparent roof panel, coupe | $750 | 4,208 |
| U1S | 12-disc CD changer | $600 | 13,725 |
The polished wheels went on 82 percent of coupes and convertibles, the head-up display on 86 percent. Neither Z51 nor F45 went on a Z06, which had its own FE4 suspension. The comfort options, from memory seats and the power passenger seat to dual-zone air and fog lamps, all show the same count on Corvette Action Center’s page (13,294 coupes, 12,456 convertibles), which may be one figure copied across; read it only as about nine in ten coupes and almost every convertible.
Colors. Eight, two of them $600 extra:
| Color (code) | Coupes | Convertibles | Z06s | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black (41U) | 2,522 | 2,402 | 2,205 | 7,129 |
| Torch Red (70U) | 2,830 | 2,286 | 1,746 | 6,862 |
| Electron Blue Metallic (21U) | 2,222 | 1,371 | 1,814 | 5,407 |
| Quicksilver Metallic (12U) | 1,808 | 1,343 | 1,467 | 4,618 |
| Millennium Yellow (79U), $600 | 1,312 | 1,663 | 1,065 | 4,040 |
| Magnetic Red Metallic II (86U), $600 | 1,609 | 1,689 | None | 3,298 |
| Pewter Metallic (11U) | 1,578 | 1,072 | None | 2,650 |
| Speedway White (40U) | 879 | 884 | None | 1,763 |

Inside. Black leather in 25,320 cars, then Light Oak (5,317), Light Gray (2,568) and Firethorn Red (2,562, of which 1,563 are Z06s). Convertible tops: black on 9,276, Light Oak on 2,933, white on 501.
No pace car to buy. The Pace Car Registry says the car that paced the May 2002 Indianapolis 500 was an early 2003 50th Anniversary coupe, and that no replicas were sold. It counts 69 2002 convertibles that served as event cars (3 Speedway White, 33 Millennium Yellow, 33 Quicksilver), later sold through dealers; no GM document for those counts turned up. A 2002 sold as a pace car needs papers to prove it.
Section 06
A manual-only recall, 170 complaints
NHTSA lists one GM campaign, the column lock: 04V060000 (GM 04006) (opens in new tab), for the electronic lock that locks the steering when the key comes out. NHTSA’s record describes two failures: a car that could be driven with the steering still locked if the fuel cut-off didn’t happen, and a lock pin that could touch the lock plate while driving. For a 2002, GM’s bulletin covers manuals and automatics built for export; a US 2002 automatic was never in it. The two aftermarket corner-lamp campaigns NHTSA lists against every C5 aren’t GM equipment.
NHTSA’s complaint file (opens in new tab) held 170, or 4.8 per 1,000 built, on October 20, 2026. Here they are beside the years either side, with this site’s approximate keyword counts of the complaint text (one complaint can land in several rows):
| 2001 | 2002 | 2003 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built | 35,627 | 35,767 | 35,469 |
| NHTSA complaints | 203 | 170 | 112 |
| Per 1,000 built | 5.7 | 4.8 | 3.2 |
| Per 1,000, column lock left out | 4.1 | 3.7 | 2.7 |
| Column lock | 57 | 38 | 16 |
| Cracked or bent wheels | about 15 | 35 | 1 |
| Fuel leak or smell | 17 | 12 | 9 |
| Active Handling faults | 7 | 12 | 8 |
| Oil consumption | 15 | 0 | 0 |
The 2001’s oil-burning complaints are gone, and the 2002 picked up a wheel problem no other C5 year comes near. At least 11 of the 170 are other Chevrolets filed under Corvette (Impalas, Malibus, Tahoes, vans); the site keeps NHTSA’s 170 so its C5 pages compare like with like. Complaints are voluntary, and older cars have had longer to collect them, so read the rates as a ranking. The years-to-avoid guide ranks every C5 year and rates the 2002 “Buy: check the wheels.”
Bulletins for 2002 alone are small stuff: a manual shifter that may not pass through neutral into fourth on the skip shift (180102, January 2002), an erratic fuel gauge (020604010, March 2002), rusting flat washers that shim the rear quarter panels (020866007 and 050602, June 2002) and the deletion of the forward hood bumpers (030602). The generation-wide items, from the harmonic balancer to headlight motor gears and seat bolsters, are in the C5 buyer’s guide.
Section 07
Cracked spokes and other 2002 weak spots
The polished wheels crack at the spokes
This is the 2002’s own problem. By this site’s reading, 35 of the 170 complaints describe cracked (34) or bent (1) wheels, filed from 2005 to 2018. Nearly every crack sits at the base of a spoke where it meets the rim, mostly on the rear 18 in wheels, found at 29,000 to 75,000 miles when a tire leaked air or came off, and several complaints name the polished wheels. GM bulletin 0703100003 (March 2007) tells dealers to inspect 2000–2004 wheels for irregularities at the base of the spokes and replace them if needed. There was no recall.

Owners in 2006 threads describe the same crack in the same place. One 2002 coupe owner’s rear wheel cracked at two spokes; once a dealer confirmed the crack went through and the wheel was GM’s, GM offered to pay half (opens in new tab). Another owner in the thread paid $200 for a vendor’s spare against a $661 quote, and a replacement may not match the other three. GM’s position on refinishing aluminum wheels (bulletin 99-08-51-007F) rules out welding or straightening them, so a cracked wheel gets replaced, not repaired.
The column lock, on manual cars only
On a 2002 the column lock is a six-speed problem. The owner’s manual lists SERVICE COLUMN LOCK and PULL KEY - WAIT 10 SEC as “Manual Transmission Only,” and says that with the key out an automatic locks its shifter while a manual also locks the steering. Ignore the second message and the fuel shuts off at 1.5 mph; the first means a tow to the dealer.
Of the 2002’s 38 column lock complaints, 20 are on Z06 VINs and none names an automatic. Thirteen say plainly that the lock failed again after recall work (up to 17 read that way), several say a dealer found their VIN outside the recall, and two give what they paid: $425 for a lock actuator in 2005 and $624.80 in 2010. GM’s Special Policy 05081, for columns that fail to unlock, ended on February 29, 2008, and GM’s 2023 bulletin PIC6522 gives dealers diagnostic steps for the two messages. The full history, and the bypass question, is in the C5 guide.
The Z06’s valve springs
A CorvetteForum member’s study of self-reported failures (opens in new tab) puts 98 of its 177 LS6 valve spring failures on 2002s. By its count, late-2002 builds (last five VIN digits above 20000) were about 17 times as likely to report one as a 2001 or 2004, and early 2002s about 6 times. Three 2002 NHTSA complaints, all filed in 2011, describe it: one engine cut out at 65 mph, another shut down in a turn and took the power steering with it. No GM bulletin or recall covers it. The Z06 guide has the detail; the short version is a receipt for new springs, or a price that covers them.
Brake module and Active Handling
About 10 complaints describe a failed brake module (EBCM, the computer behind ABS and traction control) or a SERVICE ABS message, some filed after parts went scarce. The 2001–2004 module can usually be rebuilt, though the years-to-avoid guide records 2002 owners in 2021 and 2024 whose modules couldn’t be; in a 2006 owner list, one bought a new module for $650 and fitted it himself. About 12 complaints describe Active Handling braking a single wheel with SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING displayed, some at 30 to 70 mph, the message GM bulletin 010525004A covers on 2001–2002 cars. Hold the button more than five seconds and Competitive Driving mode switches traction control off while Active Handling keeps braking.
Fuel smell and the gauge
Twelve complaints, filed 2009 to 2016, describe fuel smell or leaks, mostly at fill-ups; one dealer replaced the right tank for a leak at the hard line on top of it. No GM campaign covers a 2002: GM’s coverage for leaking tank connectors was for 2004s only (see the 2004 Corvette guide). Five more complaints describe a gauge that drops to empty, which GM’s bulletins 020604010 and 020604010A cover.
Gearboxes, clutch and ride control
Six-speed cars have their own bulletins: an inoperative reverse lockout that lets the lever into reverse when you go for fifth (040302, 2001–2002), the skip-shift bulletin (180102), a fluid leak at the rear of the car (030729006, 2002–2003), and discolored clutch fluid (051402) and a pedal that doesn’t return (051602), both 1997–2002. Automatics have 010730043 (2001–2002) for slipping or missing second, third or fourth. On F45 cars, SERVICE RIDE CONTROL, SHOCKS INOPERATIVE and MAXIMUM 80 MPH mean the shocks have failed soft.
Section 08
Glovebox codes and VIN digits: proving a 2002
The VIN. On GM’s VIN chart, every 2002 starts 1G1YY. The sixth character is the body (1 Z06, 2 coupe, 3 convertible), the seventh 2 for frontal air bags, the eighth the engine (G for the LS1, S for the LS6), then a check digit, 2 for 2002, 5 for Bowling Green and the sequence. A Z06 has to read 1 and S. The plate sits at the driver’s corner of the dash, and the sequence’s last five digits are stamped on the rear side of the front sill tie bar.
The labels. The certification label on the driver’s door edge carries the build month (kit). The Service Parts Identification label inside the glovebox lists every production option by RPO code, with the paint code (owner’s manual): check MM6 or M30, the axle (GU6, G92 or GU2), Z51 or F45, QF5 or N73, UV6, the roof codes and U1S against the ad.
Matching numbers. Engines and transmissions carry a nine-character derivative of the VIN: 1, 2 and 5, then the six-digit sequence, which should match the car’s (kit). Look at the rear of the left cylinder head or the front of the left oil pan rail on the engine. The rear axle’s tag is on the right rear of the differential.
Against a 2001. Electron Blue paint (2002–2004); no Navy Blue or Dark Bowling Green; no Speedway White Z06; a Z06 without a head-up display isn’t a 2002. The radio proves nothing, since 2001s offered the CD radio too, and the Z06’s cast-spun wheels look like the 2001’s forged ones.
Against a 2003. No “50” emblems; Pewter or Magnetic Red paint can’t be a 2003, and Medium Spiral Gray or Anniversary Red can’t be a 2002; F55 Magnetic Selective Ride on the label means 2003 or later. Fog lamps or dual-zone air prove nothing, since most 2002 coupes and convertibles have them. The tenth VIN character settles it.
Section 09
Wheels to glovebox: checking a 2002
- The wheels, every spoke. Rear wheels first, front and back of each spoke where it meets the rim, with the tire off if the seller allows. Ask whether any wheel has been replaced.
- A slow leak. A tire that loses air for no reason can be a crack: that’s how many owners found theirs.
- Column lock, on a manual. Cycle the key several times and watch for either message; ask for the recall paperwork, anything done since, and who fitted any bypass.
- Valve springs, on a Z06. The receipt, or the last five VIN digits and a price that covers the job.
- Warning lights. No SERVICE ABS, no traction light, no SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING during or after the drive.
- Fuel. Sniff around the rear after a fill-up and watch the gauge on the drive.
- The six-speed. Reverse lockout working, clean shifts into fourth, clear clutch fluid and a pedal that comes all the way back.
- F45 shocks, if the label lists them. No ride control messages on the dash, before or after the drive.
- The glovebox label against the ad, and the VIN, tie bar and drivetrain stamps against each other.
- Records and a lift. Service history, then a shop that knows C5s, with the C5 guide’s generation-wide list in hand.
Section 10
Auction money in 2026, Z06 against base
From January 1 to October 19, 2026, Bring a Trailer (opens in new tab) sold nine stock 2002 Z06s for $20,250 to $50,000, a median of $28,000 by this site’s count. The top sale was a 430-mile car in early October; a 12,000-mile car brought $31,500 three days later, and a 42,000-mile car $28,000 in May. Supercharged, engine-swapped and track-built Z06s are left out.
Stock coupes and convertibles were scarcer: six listings, five sales, $13,500 to $22,500, a median $20,750. The one coupe, a 20,000-mile six-speed, brought $21,750 in May; the convertibles ran from a six-speed at $13,500 to a 14,000-mile car at $22,500 in September. In the same window, base 2001s sold for a median $20,000 and 2003s $21,400, with Z06s at $31,125 (2001) and $31,222 (2003). Small samples, and auction cars skew clean and low-mile.
Hagerty’s valuation tool (opens in new tab), archived on February 7, 2026, gave a 2002 in #3 (“good”) condition $17,000 coupe, $18,600 convertible, the same figures it gave the 2001, 2003 and 2004. Hagerty’s single-car pages for the 2000 treat its generation figures as six-speed values and take 10 percent off for an automatic (the 2000 guide has them); no 2002 single-car page could be checked. The generation page lists no Z06, and classic.com offered no 2002 figure this guide could read. These are past sales and valuations, not a forecast.
Section 11
Buy the Z06, with the spring receipt
The 2002 to buy is the Z06. It’s the reason the year matters: the first 405 hp C5, GM’s 3.9 seconds to 60 mph, the stronger clutch and revised shocks, for about $7,000 more than a coupe or convertible at auction. Buy one with a receipt for new valve springs, or an early build (last five VIN digits under 20000) priced for the job, with the column lock recall done and the ABS and traction lights dark. Then book a track day, and let the drivers of cars at twice the price wonder where the C5 came from.
For a removable roof, a folding top or an automatic, buy a coupe or convertible and check the wheels first. A 2002 automatic’s steering doesn’t lock when the key comes out, and the column lock recall never covered it: an automatic convertible is the easiest 2002 to live with, and a six-speed Z51 coupe the sharper car, with lock paperwork to read. The best Corvette years guide and the C5 vs C6 guide explain why a 2002 or 2003 is where to start when every dollar counts in America’s sports car.
Skip any 2002 with a cracked wheel the seller calls cosmetic. The rest, at about $21,000 for a base car, is the C5 at its best for the money.
