Most people who bought a new Corvette for 2006 didn’t buy the one the year is remembered for. GM’s August 2005 release said the second model year of the C6 (2005–2013) “will always be known” as the year the 505 hp Z06 was “let loose,” and Bowling Green built 6,272 Z06s. It also built 27,749 coupes and convertibles with the 400 hp LS2, and 19,094 of those had the year’s other new hardware: a six-speed automatic with paddles on the steering wheel, in place of the 2005’s four-speed.

So a 2006 is two cars. The LS2 coupe or convertible is now one of the cheapest ways into a C6: on Bring a Trailer in 2026, base 2006s sold for a median $19,400 (7 sales), less than base 2005s and 2007s brought in the same months. The Z06 is the first of the 7.0-liter cars, at a median $43,500 (6 unmodified cars). Both carry the year’s record: five recalls and, on the coupes, more roof complaints than any other C6 year.

Is a 2006 a good buy? Yes, once the roof checks out. The LS2 car is the budget pick in the C6 buyer’s guide, and the 2005’s manual-car shut-off trap is gone. A Z06 adds the LS7’s cylinder head question, which the C6 Z06 guide covers in full.

Section 01

The 2006 changes, from GM’s list to the owners’

GM’s 2006 release (opens in new tab) and the same text in its 2006 vehicle information kit, in this site’s manual library, list the coupe and convertible’s changes:

  • A six-speed automatic with paddles, the Hydra-Matic 6L80 (RPO code MYC, GM’s code for a factory option), in place of the four-speed. More in The paddle-shift automatic’s first year.
  • A smaller steering wheel: three spokes and 370 mm across, shared with the Z06, where the 2005’s has four spokes.
  • Passenger sensing. GM’s Passenger Sensing System replaced the 2005’s manual switch for the passenger air bag, with a status light in the mirror.
  • XM with Bose. Satellite radio came with the Bose stereo in the 48 states, its antennas hidden in the side mirrors (GM’s fact file). A 2005’s XM antenna sits out in the open.
  • Paint and trim. Velocity Yellow Tintcoat and Monterey Red Metallic Tintcoat replaced Millennium Yellow and Magnetic Red (GM put the new two on late 2005s too), Titanium Grey replaced Steel Gray inside, and the center stack got chrome rings around the console knobs.

Gone with the four-speed: the 2.73 and 3.15 axles. The equipment groups became 1LT, 2LT and 3LT on the coupe, 2LT and 3LT on the convertible, and 1LZ and 2LZ on the Z06, in place of 2005’s 1SX, 1SA and 1SB.

What doesn’t show. A 2006 manual needn’t be shut off in reverse: GM’s bulletin PIC3139C says that requirement ended with the 2006 model year, and the 2006 owner’s manual only recommends reverse, with no battery-drain warning. Dead-battery complaints to NHTSA fell from about 15 on the 2005 to about 3. The column-lock no-start is murkier: GM’s fix bulletins name 2005 manuals only and no 2006 complaint describes it, yet GM’s 2006 kit still describes a column lock module, the manual lists a column lock fuse and a 2006 bulletin summary (3754) mentions a “Service Column Lock” message on manual cars. Owners say the lock was deleted; GM’s paper doesn’t settle it.

What owners add: a small GM badge on each rear fender ahead of the wheel, and a stronger rear end. No GM document found for this guide mentions either; the 2005 guide says the same of the rear end.

And for 2007. GM’s 2007 release (opens in new tab) added steering-wheel audio controls with Bose, two-tone seats on the coupe and convertible, Atomic Orange in place of Daytona Sunset Orange, OnStar on the 2LZ Z06 and a bigger glove box, made possible, GM said, by “air bag technology advancements.” GM’s five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty started with the 2007 cars too, so the 2006 was the last C6 without it.

Section 02

The paddle-shift automatic’s first year

The 6L80 carries its control module inside the transmission. GM’s kit sets its gearing against the four-speed’s: a 4.02 first gear against 3.06, two overdrives (0.85 and 0.67) and a 2.56 axle. By this site’s arithmetic, that’s a shorter first gear overall than any 2005 automatic (10.3:1 against 9.6:1 with the 3.15 axle) and a taller top gear for the highway.

The owner’s manual explains the lever: P, R, N, D and S. D is fully automatic. S, for Sport, holds lower gears, shifts harder when it senses hard driving and wakes the paddles: push the one above the spokes to shift up, pull the one behind to shift down. In paddle mode the car downshifts as it slows and pulls away in second unless you pick first. Seven in ten LS2 buyers chose it. It takes DEXRON-VI, 12.5 quarts (11.8 L), not the 2005 four-speed’s DEXRON-III.

The first-year paper trail. GM announced the 6L80 to dealers in September 2005 and listed a “2006 model year 6L80 automatic transmission exchange program,” known now only from a one-line summary. In December 2005 (opens in new tab), three months into production, GM’s preliminary information dealt with busy shifting between third and sixth at 30 to 50 mph (code P1751), from debris or an undersized hole in the valve body’s spacer plate; dealers got a new valve body and control module free. In January 2006, bulletin 06-07-30-002 reprogrammed the module for slow engagement out of Park (normal is about 1.5 seconds with warm fluid, GM said).

Later bulletins reach the 2006 too: 09-07-30-004J (opens in new tab) for 2006–2009 automatics that slip in reverse or third or shift harshly from second to third, from a cracked clutch housing, and PIP5429, which calls a flare on the first 2-3 shift after the car sits normal.

The shifter. Owners’ complaints point at the lever more than the gearbox: about 28 describe a lever stuck in Park, Neutral or Drive, one that refuses Park or Reverse, or broken shift-cable bushings; about 17 are strictly stuck in Park, against about 66 on the 2005. No GM bulletin for it turned up. If the lever won’t leave Park, the manual says to put the car in accessory mode, hold the brake, shift to Neutral, start the engine, then shift, and have the car inspected. For 2008, GM quickened the shifts, as the C6 guide notes.

LS2 and LS7: the 2006 numbers

The short answer for horsepower: 400 for the LS2 and 505 for the Z06’s LS7. GM’s kit says both figures were certified under SAE’s new J2723 procedure, approved in March 2005, and that GM was the first maker to use it.

GM’s figures come from the kit’s specification pages and the owner’s manual; the EPA ratings are today’s, from fueleconomy.gov. GM’s paper disagrees with itself in places: the Z06 fact file says 475 lb-ft, and early media sheets said 500 hp. Oil, by the manual: 5.5 quarts for the LS2, 6.0 with Z51 (the kit says 5.5 for every LS2) and 8.0 for the LS7’s dry sump, which keeps its oil in a separate tank. GM’s fact file called the LS2 car the first with 400 hp to escape the federal gas guzzler tax.

Fuel. Premium, 91 or higher, for both. The LS2 runs on 87 with slightly less acceleration; the LS7 takes 87 only in an emergency, and 93 for best performance, per the manual.

Gearboxes. Every 2006 has a six-speed: a six-speed manual or a six-speed paddle-shift automatic (no automatic Z06).

GM supplies the ratios and Corvette Action Center the counts; CAC also lists eight Z06s with a 3.63 axle.

How fast is a 2006 Corvette? For the Z06, GM’s release gives 3.7 seconds to 60 mph “in first gear,” 11.7 seconds at 125 mph in the quarter mile and 198 mph on Germany’s Autobahn; twelve magazine tests from October 2005 to January 2007 ran 3.4 to 4.2 seconds to 60, as Corvette Action Center tabulates them. GM’s 2006 documents give no LS2 figures; its 2005 kit quoted 186 mph, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds (4.1 with Z51) and a 12.6-second quarter mile, and its 2007 release repeated the 186 mph.

Section 04

The first C6 Z06, briefly

The LS7 was only the start. GM’s kit lists an aluminum frame, a magnesium front cradle and roof panel, carbon fiber front fenders and floors, a fixed roof, a body three inches wider, extra coolers and the battery moved to the back. The engine has titanium rods and intake valves and a 7,000 rpm redline, and the only gearbox is a strengthened six-speed manual. GM priced it from $65,800 including destination. Bowling Green built 6,272 (2006 is the Z06’s third-biggest year, behind 2007 and 2008) in six colors from GM’s order guide: no Monterey Red, no Arctic White.

1LZ or 2LZ. The order guide gives a 1LZ frontal air bags only, the single-CD radio and a manual tilt column, with the head-up display and xenon low beams standard. 2LZ adds side air bags, memory, heated seats, auto-dimming mirrors, the Bose six-disc stereo with XM, the power telescoping column and Home Remote. Every 2006 Z06 has a manual passenger seat, one of GM’s weight savings, and none has OnStar: GM first offered it on the Z06 for 2007.

The question every Z06 brings. By this site’s count, 21 of the 2006’s NHTSA complaints describe LS7 valve guide wear or a dropped valve, every one a Z06, and GM’s bulletin 13-06-01-001 covers the 2006–2013 Z06 and 427. The C6 Z06 guide reads every complaint, prices the fix and explains the check: buy a 2006 Z06 with receipts for heads-off work, or price the job in.

No 2006 ZR1, no 2006 Grand Sport. The supercharged ZR1 arrived for 2009 and the Grand Sport for 2010, as the C6 guide records. A 2006 wearing either badge has been dressed up.

The pace car. On May 28, 2006, Lance Armstrong drove a 2006 Z06 to start the 90th Indianapolis 500, the Corvette’s eighth time pacing the race and Chevrolet’s record 17th, in an abstract flag livery of Victory Red and Cobalt Blue over Arctic White. GM called it “virtually identical” to showroom Z06s, strobes and safety gear aside. Neither GM’s order guide nor Bowling Green’s counts show a replica package, so a seller’s pace car story is only as good as its paperwork.

Section 05

Bowling Green’s 34,021

Chevrolet built 34,021: 16,598 coupes, 11,151 convertibles and 6,272 Z06s, per Corvette Action Center’s 2006 production page (opens in new tab). That’s fewer than the 2005’s 37,372 and the 2007’s 40,561. The shares here are this site’s arithmetic.

What a 2006 cost new

Only the Z06’s price comes from GM: $65,800 with destination, announced in June 2005. For the coupe and convertible, Hagerty’s valuation pages carry $43,690 and $51,390, and Corvette Blogger gives the coupe as $44,490, which matches with an $800 destination charge. No 2006 option prices turned up; the 2005’s are in the 2005 guide.

Equipment groups

The 1LT coupe is the stripped one: base seats in Ebony only, frontal air bags only, the single-CD radio. 2LT and 3LT bring sport seats with side air bags and a power passenger seat, and 3LT adds the head-up display, an auto-dimming mirror and the Bose six-disc stereo. There’s no 1LT convertible. GM’s table doesn’t mark every item by group, so read the option label for the rest.

F55, Magnetic Selective Ride Control, adds a Tour and Sport selector on the console.

GM listed LeMans Blue as a premium paint and Velocity Yellow and Monterey Red as premium tintcoats. Since both new colors also went on late 2005s, paint alone doesn’t date a car.

Inside, Ebony went in 58.7 percent of cars, Cashmere in 21.1 (never a Z06), Titanium in 14.2 and Red in 6.0. GM announced a Storm Gray convertible top in place of Gray, then dropped Storm Gray from its order guide on October 3, 2005; Bowling Green’s count shows Black (7,318), Beige (3,076) and Gray (757) tops.

NHTSA’s recall list (opens in new tab) for the 2006, pulled October 18, 2026, holds five recalls, two of them for the roof, against six on the 2005 and two on the 2007. Production began in September 2005, so 10V172000 reaches only the first five months of 2006 cars; the driver’s door label gives the build month. GM’s low-beam bulletin notes the fault appears once the engine is warm and can go away as the fuse box cools; the jumper comes in wiring kit GM 23273949 (OEM).

The complaint record

By October 18, 2026, owners had filed 413 complaints (opens in new tab) with NHTSA about the 2006. This site sorted them by keyword, so the theme counts are approximate and a complaint can count twice:

Rates use Corvette Action Center’s production counts. Complaints are voluntary and follow publicity: 39 were filed in 2006 itself, mostly about roofs, and the busiest year was 2014, when GM announced the low-beam recall.

LS2 or Z06? Where NHTSA stores a readable VIN, its eighth character splits the complaints: 306 for 27,749 LS2 cars (11.0 per 1,000) and 68 for 6,272 Z06s (10.8), by this site’s arithmetic. Same rate, different faults. The LS2 cars’ run to Active Handling, low beams, roofs, fuel smell and the shifter; about 20 of the Z06’s are valve guides, and three of the year’s four fire-flagged complaints are Z06s (owner reports, not findings). The sixth character splits the LS2 cars, and the convertible comes out cleanest: 71 complaints for 11,151 built (6.4 per 1,000), against 234 for 16,598 coupes (14.1).

Roof panels that let go

No C6 year has more roof complaints than the 2006: 49, with 24 filed in 2006, when the cars were new. About 30 describe a panel separating from its frame, and at least 16 a roof coming off on the road, three of them Z06s; one Z06 owner told NHTSA the roof flew off at 70 mph, was replaced under warranty and flew off again at 55. Recall 06V181000 covered only certain painted roofs, and some owners were told their VIN fell outside it; 09V491000 then reached 2005–2007 removable roofs and the Z06’s fixed one. Not every creak is adhesive: bulletin 08-08-67-013H blames dirty or dry weatherstrips. A convertible has no roof panel, so neither recall applies to it.

Active Handling, low beams, fuel and the rest

  • Active Handling. 83 complaints mention it (63 on LS2 cars and 9 on Z06s, where the VIN can be read): the warning, brakes applying on their own, or both. Recall 10V172000 aside, bulletin 060235002B deals with a C0710 steering wheel position sensor code on 2005–2008 cars.
  • Low beams. 62 complaints, 50 of them filed in 2013 and 2014 around recall 14V251000.
  • Fuel smell. 42 complaints, nearly all on LS2 cars, filed from 2015 on. A 2006 falls a year short of Special Coverage 15682, GM’s program for leaking fuel pump modules, which starts with the 2007; the C6 guide covers the repair.
  • Manual cars. GM’s Customer Satisfaction Program 06523 (March 2006) covered flywheel and clutch interference on 2006 manual cars, LS2 and LS7. Its VIN range wasn’t found for this guide, so ask whether it was done. Special Coverage 14717, for the clutch hydraulics, has expired, like 15643 for the air bag light’s seat connector on cars with power seats.
  • Rear axle and water. A clunk or chatter on turns calls for fresh axle fluid under bulletin 07-04-20-002A. Bulletin 4288 deals with water on the passenger floor of 2005–2007 cars.

The harmonic balancer and the rest of what goes wrong across the generation are in the C6 buyer’s guide.

Section 07

Proving a 2006: VIN, labels and tells

The VIN. Real 2006 VINs read: 1G1YY; a 2 for a coupe or Z06, or a 3 for a convertible; a 5 (frontal air bags only, so a 1LT coupe or 1LZ Z06) or a 6 (side air bags too); the engine; a check digit; 6 for 2006; 5 for Bowling Green; and a sequence from 100001. GM’s 2006 VIN chart agrees from the eighth character on but prints different codes for the sixth and seventh. None of the 373 readable 2006 VINs in NHTSA’s complaint file follows them, and NHTSA’s decoder reads those places as listed here.

The eighth character, and the early Y. U is the LS2 and E the LS7, the only place the VIN tells a Z06 from a coupe. A footnote on GM’s chart gives LS7 cars up to sequence 100161, among the first 161 2006 Corvettes built, a Y instead; how many Z06s that is, GM doesn’t say. NHTSA’s file holds one Y-coded 2006 whose owner calls it a Z06, and NHTSA’s own decoder misreads the Y as a 4.6-liter engine. A low-sequence Y car with the Z06’s hardware and matching stamps can be the real thing.

Stamps and labels. Check the stampings against the VIN plate: the sequence’s last five digits on the rear side of the front sill tie bar, and a partial VIN on the engine (left rear of the block) and the transmission. Every RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification label, which GM’s kit places under the spare tire cover in the rear compartment and the owner’s manual in the glove box. Check both.

Option tells. MZ6 on the label marks a Z51 manual. On an automatic, Z51 has no axle tell any more, since every 2006 automatic has the 2.56: look for the cross-drilled rotors. On a coupe or convertible, the head-up display and Bose six-disc (UV6 and US9) are 3LT items. On a Z06, a 6 in the VIN’s seventh place (side air bags) is the 2LZ tell; the Bose was available on a 1LZ too.

2005, 2006 or 2007? A 2006 has the three-spoke wheel, an S on an automatic’s lever, no XM antenna on the body and, owners say, the small GM badge on each rear fender. A four-spoke wheel, a four-speed automatic or a Steel Gray interior means a 2005. A 2007 adds audio buttons on the steering wheel (with Bose), the bigger glove box, Atomic Orange paint and, on a coupe or convertible, two-tone seats. When the clues disagree, the VIN’s tenth character decides: a 6 is a 2006.

Section 08

Checks that matter on a 2006

  1. Recall paperwork. Run the VIN. On a coupe or Z06, proof of the roof recalls that apply, or the new-design panel; on every car, the low-beam jumper; on a car built through January 2006 with the telescoping column, the Active Handling repair.
  2. The roof. Listen for snapping on rough pavement, watch the roof as a door shuts with the windows up, and check the headliner for stains.
  3. Headlights, hot. After a proper drive, with the engine warm, the low beams should still come on.
  4. The dash, start to finish. No “Service Active Handling” message or air bag light at any point on the drive.
  5. An automatic, cold and warm. Every lever position and every paddle: no busy shifting at 30 to 50 mph, no slow engagement out of Park, no slip in reverse or third, and a lever that leaves Park and returns to it every time.
  6. A manual. A clutch pedal that returns every time, and whether flywheel program 06523 was done.
  7. Fuel smell after a fill above half a tank, around the rear and under the left-hand tank.
  8. The rear axle and footwells. No clunk or chatter on tight turns, and dry passenger-side carpet.
  9. Fobs and battery. Two Keyless Access fobs came standard; for a “NO FOB DETECTED” message, GM’s PIC5961 says to check the batteries first. Battery sizes are in the battery guide, storage in the maintainer guide.
  10. A Z06. Head receipts or the inspection priced in, and the dry-sump level checked the way the manual says: engine at 175°F or more, then off at least five minutes. A cold reading can show no oil, which GM calls normal.
  11. Tires. Run-flats, no spare or jack, and pressure sensors whose batteries GM designed for 10 years: on a 20-year-old car, plan for new ones.
  12. Paper and a lift. Match the option label to the ad, then read the records and pay for a pre-purchase inspection by a C6 specialist.

A base 2006 at $19,400, a Z06 at $43,500

How much is a 2006 Corvette worth? On Bring a Trailer (opens in new tab), between January 1 and October 18, 2026, seven unmodified base 2006s sold for $10,250 to $27,000. By this site’s count that’s a median of $19,400, with the middle half between $16,350 and $23,500. Six were convertibles (median $20,278); the one coupe, a 34,000-mile 3LT, brought $19,400. Six unmodified Z06s sold for $38,000 to $48,500, a median of $43,500; count four modified cars too and ten Z06s sold at a median $48,000.

Sale date, 2026CarSold for
January 5Convertible, six-speed$17,555
March 19Convertible$10,250
March 30Convertible, 17,000 miles$27,000
April 13Convertible 3LT$16,350
June 27Coupe 3LT, 34,000 miles$19,400
September 1Convertible, six-speed$23,000
September 9Convertible 3LT, six-speed$23,500
January 5Z06, 9,000 miles, one owner$47,000
May 6Z06 2LZ, 9,000 miles$48,500
June 18Z06 2LZ$38,000
June 24Z06 2LZ, one owner$39,999
July 1Z06, 26,000 miles$39,500
September 30Z06 2LZ, 15,000 miles$47,500

Over the same months, eight base 2005s brought a median $23,875 and six base 2007s $22,250, not counting three 2007 Indy 500 Pace Car Edition convertibles. That makes the 2006 the cheapest LS2 year on Bring a Trailer in 2026, though six of its seven sales were convertibles. With samples this small, one sale moves a median, and auction cars skew clean and low-mile.

Archived copies of Hagerty’s valuation tool (opens in new tab) put a 2006 coupe in #3 (“good”) condition at $22,200 and a convertible at $21,400 in April 2025, and a Z06 at $37,200 in October 2025; Hagerty takes 10 percent off for an automatic. classic.com’s archived 2006 pages averaged $25,024 over 47 base-car sales (February 2025) and $44,887 over 60 Z06 sales (December 2024). Those are past values, not a prediction.

Section 10

Convertible first, then coupe, then Z06

Buy a 2006 convertible. It has the LS2’s 400 hp and no roof panel to come loose, so neither roof recall is yours to chase, and its complaint rate is less than half the coupe’s (see Roofs, recalls and 413 complaints). It cost about $7,700 more than a coupe new, by Hagerty’s list prices, yet Hagerty valued it a little below one in April 2025, and convertibles made up six of this year’s seven base-car sales on Bring a Trailer, so there’s a choice. Look for a 3LT with the power top, the low-beam jumper fitted, the Active Handling repair on file if it’s an early car with the telescoping column, and records.

Take the six-speed manual if you’ll drive it hard, and add Z51 if it will see a road course; only 3,024 manual convertibles were built, by this site’s arithmetic, so be patient. The paddle-shift automatic is no reason to pass, as the four-speed can be on a 2005, but it’s a first-year transmission: buy one that shifts cleanly in D, in S and on every paddle, cold and warm, with Hagerty’s automatic discount in the price.

The coupe is the right car with its roof recall paperwork and a quiet roof over rough pavement; without them, walk. The Z06 is a different purchase: the first year of the 505 hp LS7 and GM’s 198 mph for a median $43,500, bought with head receipts or $3,000–6,000 set aside (the C6 Z06 guide’s figure, on 2024–2025 prices), and its roof recall done.

A base 2006 is America’s sports car for less than any other LS2 year brought on Bring a Trailer in 2026. Drop the top, slide the lever to S and work the paddles up an empty two-lane, and $19,400 for 400 hp stops sounding like a typo. The best Corvette years guide names 2006–2007 as the C6’s budget years, C5 vs C6 weighs the C6 against the C5 (1997–2004), and the 2005 guide covers the year the 2006 fixed.
