2009 Corvette buyer's guide: the new ZR1, the last C6 Z51 and what a 2009 sells for
Published
A window in the hood, a supercharger under it and a sticker past $100,000: the ZR1 arrived for 2009 as the car GM called the most powerful and fastest it had ever built. It came in a year when Bowling Green built fewer than half as many Corvettes as the year before: by the plant’s figures, as Corvette Action Center tabulates them, 16,956, down from 35,310 for 2008. Of those, 1,415 were ZR1s.
The rest of the 2009 story is quieter and more useful to a buyer. Bluetooth became available and variable-ratio steering standard, and 2009 was the last C6 (2005–2013) a buyer could order as a plain coupe or convertible with the Z51 handling package, which became the Grand Sport for 2010. The C6 buyer’s guide covers the generation.
Is the 2009 Corvette a good year? Yes, with two checks. NHTSA lists no safety recall for it, and its 152 owner complaints work out to 9.0 per 1,000 cars built, against 16.7 for a 2008. More than half of those complaints describe the fuel smell GM once covered and no longer does, and on the Z06 the cylinder heads need proof. On Bring a Trailer in 2026, a 2009 Z06 sold for a median $48,750 (8 sales).

The 2009 changes: Bluetooth, steering, a cheaper convertible
GM’s June 9, 2008 release (opens in new tab) lists what was new: the ZR1, Bluetooth, variable-ratio steering and a 1LT convertible, plus smaller items. Leaving the ZR1 aside, these are the ones a buyer can find on a car today:
- Bluetooth for the phone (RPO UPF; RPO is GM’s code for a factory option), marked “NEW!” in GM’s order guide and included in the 2LT, 3LT and 4LT groups. The owner’s manual and the Getting to Know supplement explain the pairing and the controls.
- Variable-ratio steering and steering-wheel audio controls, both standard on every model. Owners comparing 2008 and 2009 cars on CorvetteForum name the steering as the change they notice.
- A 1LT convertible with a manual top and a lower price; 2LT and higher convertibles got the power top as standard.
- Paint and trim. Cyber Gray Metallic and Blade Silver Metallic replaced Machine Silver, for nine colors. Two custom leather interiors joined, the crossed-flags emblems got a bright surround, and the coupe and Z06 got a power hatch pull-down. GM also revised the antilock brakes, traction control and Magnetic Ride.
- On the Z06: the dry-sump oil tank grew from 8 quarts to 10.5, the ZR1’s size, plus spider-design wheels, sill plates, a standard acoustic package and optional side airbags.
The 6.2-liter LS3 and the Z06’s 7.0-liter LS7 carried over from 2008; the 2008 Corvette guide covers the LS3’s arrival.

What came for 2010. The Grand Sport replaced the Z51 package, manual cars got launch control, side airbags became standard on every model, and holding the automatic’s up-shift button for a second took it out of paddle mode. The 2010 Corvette guide has the details. So a 2009 is the last C6 with optional side airbags and the last with a base-car Z51 (the Z51 name returned on the 2014 Stingray).
Was there a 2009 Corvette Stingray? No. GM sold no 2009 Corvette by that name; it returned on the C7 (2014–2019). A 2009 is a C6, the sixth-generation Corvette.
Section 02
Four 2009s: coupe, convertible, Z06, ZR1
| 2009 version | Engine | Gearbox | Curb weight, GM | Built | Price new | Bring a Trailer, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coupe | 6.2-liter LS3, 430 hp (436 with NPP) | Six-speed manual or six-speed automatic | 3,217 lb | 8,737 | $47,895 | No sale |
| Convertible | LS3 | Manual or automatic | 3,222 lb | 3,343 | $52,550 | No sale |
| Z06 | 7.0-liter LS7, 505 hp, dry sump | Six-speed manual only | 3,180 lb | 3,461 | $73,255 | Median $48,750 (8 sales) |
| ZR1 | 6.2-liter supercharged LS9, 638 hp, dry sump | Six-speed manual only | 3,324 lb | 1,415 | $103,300 | Median $90,000 (3 sales) |
GM’s prices, as posted on June 17, 2008, ran $47,895 coupe, $73,255 Z06, $103,300 ZR1 and $52,550 for the convertible, each with the $850 destination charge; the ZR1 also paid a $1,700 gas guzzler tax. Weights are from GM’s June 2008 releases (its earlier order guide differs slightly). Against 2008, the coupe cost $1,900 more and the convertible, thanks to the 1LT, $1,785 less (this site’s arithmetic).
2009 Corvette horsepower: 430 hp, or 436 with the dual-mode exhaust (RPO NPP), for an LS3 car, at 5,900 rpm, with 424 lb-ft at 4,600 (428 with NPP); 505 hp at 6,300 rpm and 470 lb-ft at 4,800 for the Z06; 638 hp at 6,500 rpm and 604 lb-ft at 3,800 for the ZR1, per the owner’s manual.
The Z51 package, one last time. GM’s order guide pitched the $1,695 Z51 at the “Gymkhana/Autocross enthusiast”: extra cooling, stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, its own shocks, larger cross-drilled brakes (13.4-inch front and 13-inch rear rotors, against 12.8 and 12) and its own tires. With the manual it brought the MZ6 gearbox, with a shorter 2.97:1 first gear and 0.57 sixth against the standard box’s 2.66 and 0.50; with the automatic, the 2.73 axle in place of the 2.56. It couldn’t be combined with Magnetic Ride (F55), which brought the same brakes. GM’s release called the Z51 car “very close” to the previous-generation Z06.
Car and Driver’s December 2008 comparison put numbers on it: a Z51 coupe ran 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and pulled 0.99 g on the skidpad, against 3.6 seconds for the Z06 and 3.4 for the ZR1. The magazine called the Z51 at $1,695 “a value.” GM’s own figures: 3.7 seconds and 198 mph for the Z06, 3.4 seconds and 205 mph for the ZR1.

The Z06. 3,461 built, more than two for every ZR1; for 2010 the order reversed, 518 Z06s against 1,577 ZR1s. The 2009 Z06 is the first with the 10.5-quart oil tank, which the C6 Z06 guide counts in its favor. It also falls in the years GM named for LS7 valve-guide wear (see LS7 heads: every 2009 Z06 is in GM’s range).
The ZR1. The supercharged LS9, carbon fiber body panels, carbon-ceramic brakes and a $10,000 3ZR package that 1,202 of the 1,415 buyers took. GM’s clutch program 09160 covered 297 of the year’s cars. The C6 ZR1 guide covers what to check, and it makes a 2010 or 2011 3ZR its pick over a 2009, for the features 2010 added.

The Competition Sport. GM’s release for RPO CSC called it a “Limited build scheduled for Spring ‘09 only”: Competition Gray stripes and wheels, Corvette Racing logos and racing pedals, on a 436 hp 1LT Z51 coupe or a 1LZ Z06. Corvette Action Center counts 72: 52 coupes and 20 Z06s.
Section 03
16,956 cars: what 2009 buyers ordered
Bowling Green’s 2009 production table (opens in new tab), via Corvette Action Center, gives 16,956, down 52 percent on 2008 (2010 fell again, to 12,194). No GM document found for this guide explains the drop. Of the 12,080 LS3 cars, 72 percent were coupes (shares are this site’s arithmetic).
- Gearboxes. The six-speed paddle-shift automatic (MX0) went into 8,560 LS3 cars, 71 percent. Of the manuals, 1,764 have the standard gearbox and 1,756 the Z51’s MZ6: 1,460 coupes and 296 convertibles. Every Z06 and ZR1 is a manual.
- Z51. 4,515 cars (3,516 coupes, 999 convertibles), 37 percent of LS3 cars. Magnetic Ride went on 2,105 LS3 cars and every ZR1.
- Dual-mode exhaust. 6,238 cars, 52 percent of LS3 cars.
- Equipment groups. 1LT 3,271 (238 of them convertibles, the new trim), 2LT 1,879, 3LT 5,230 and 4LT 757. Z06: 1LZ 424, 2LZ 1,654 and 3LZ 1,163.
- The rest. Bluetooth went into 12,192 cars (72 percent of all 2009s), navigation 7,903, and 392 buyers took museum delivery.

| Color (code) | Built | Share |

| Arctic White (10U) | 863 | 5.1% |
| Atomic Orange (83U) | 726 | 4.3% |
| LeMans Blue Metallic (19U) | 1 | a single ZR1 |
Crystal Red and Arctic White weren’t offered on the Z06 or ZR1.
Corvette Action Center’s table also counts two batches no GM document read for this guide confirms: 125 GT1 cars and 375 yellow convertibles built for Hertz (RPO ZHZ) in late May and June 2009. Treat a car sold as either one as unproven until its option label and paperwork agree.
Section 04
No safety recall, one emissions recall
NHTSA, the US road safety agency, lists no recall for the 2009 Corvette (opens in new tab) (checked October 24, 2026), and none for 2008 or 2010 either. The 2009’s record: no safety recall, one emissions recall.
Product Emission Recall 14523A (opens in new tab) (September 2015) covers certain 2008–2009 Corvettes with the LS3 and the California emission system (RPO NU5), which may put out more than California allows. Dealers reprogram the engine computer and replace both catalytic converters and the underbody pipe, 2009s first. It’s a voluntary emissions recall, so NHTSA’s safety list doesn’t carry it; California asks for a proof-of-correction certificate.
The GM programs and campaigns that reach a 2009:
- OnStar, twice. Campaign 08-259 (late 2008) replaced an off-spec OnStar module on 2009s only. Program 14648A covers 2009–2010 cars whose OnStar module can flatten the battery in about four days; it ended August 31, 2017, and the battery guide lists it.
- Low beams. Program 14203 (2008–2013): heat makes the underhood fuse and relay box bend the low-beam relay wire until it breaks. Dealers fit a jumper wire, kit
GM 23273949(OEM). - Convertible tops. Campaign PB-08312: on certain 2008–2009 convertibles the fabric can come away from its bracket at the windshield header; the fix is a new bracket.
- ZR1 clutch. Program 09160 (July 2009) fitted a new clutch to 297 ZR1s whose damper spring could fracture.
- Expired coverages. Special Coverage 14717 (clutch hydraulics, every manual car) and 15643 (the seat connector behind the airbag light) both ran 10 years or 120,000 miles.
- Bulletins. 09-07-30-004J covers 2006–2009 automatics that slip in reverse or third, and PIP4750F says an apparent balancer wobble on 2009–2013 cars is an optical illusion “in most cases”: replace it only with more than 0.40 mm (0.0157 in) of runout.
The complaint record. NHTSA’s owner complaint file for the 2009 (opens in new tab), pulled October 24, 2026, holds 152 in all, 79 about fuel smell or leaks.
| Model year | Complaints | Built | Per 1,000 built |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 589 | 35,310 | 16.7 |
| 2009 | 152 | 16,956 | 9.0 |
| 2010 | 84 | 12,194 | 6.9 |
This site read all 152 and filed each under one theme. The narratives are owners’ accounts, not findings:
| What the complaint describes | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Fuel smell or leak | 79 |
| LS7 valve guides or a dropped valve (Z06) | 23 |
| Airbag warning light | 15 |
| Doors that wouldn’t open, or an occupant locked in | 6 |
| Automatic stuck in Park, shifter or shift cable | 5 |
| Active Handling, traction or ABS warnings | 5 |
| Low beams out | 4 |
| Fuel gauge or pump, no leak | 3 |
| Other headlamp problems | 2 |
| Clutch pedal | 2 |
| Other single reports, and 2 that describe no defect | 8 |
Several airbag-light owners say the light comes and goes as a seat moves, the condition 15643 describes. Where the VIN can be read, LS3 cars drew about 7.7 complaints per 1,000 built, Z06s 11.8 and ZR1s 0.7; half the Z06 complaints (21 of 41) are about valve guides.
Section 05
79 complaints about fuel, and a coverage that’s gone
Of the 79 fuel complaints, 27 tie the smell to a tank above half or full, 43 mention a garage, and 31 name the driver’s or left side. That pattern matches GM’s Special Coverage 15682 (opens in new tab): fuel odor, fuel drops under the left-hand tank with the gauge above half, or a check engine light, all from a leak at the flange of the left-hand fuel pump module. Dealers replaced the module.
It’s an aging fault: no 2009 owner filed a fuel complaint before 2014, and filings peaked at 15 in 2016. Most come from LS3 cars (58), but 13 are Z06s.
The coverage ran 10 years or 120,000 miles from the day the car went into service. GM released it in phases, all 2008s first, then letters for the remaining years, 2009 among them, from January 31, 2017. By this site’s arithmetic, a 2009 that went into service in 2008 or 2009 was covered until 2018 or 2019; one owner says a dealer told him in 2020 that it had expired in June 2019. Owners have told NHTSA what the repair cost them since: $3,300 at 132,000 miles in 2020, $2,700 at 45,000 miles in 2022 and $1,963.02 in 2024, with one quote of about $4,000 in 2023. GM’s own labor table, as the 2008 guide quotes it, allows 2.5 hours on a manual car and 7.5 on an automatic.
Three more owners describe a gauge that drops to empty or a pump that quit without a leak, as GM’s PIC-5596 describes for 2009–2012 cars. The C6 guide’s section Known C6 problems by model year covers the repair.
Section 06
LS7 heads: every 2009 Z06 is in GM’s range
The LS7 valve-guide argument runs through every C6 Z06, and the C6 Z06 guide lays it out in full. For a 2009, what matters is the dates GM itself gave.
- GM’s statement. On October 11, 2012, Chevrolet Customer Service wrote (opens in new tab) that the guide issue affected a small number of 2008 to 2011 Z06s, came from a machining error at the head supplier, and was contained in February 2011 with 100 percent inspection. Every 2009 Z06 falls in that range.
- GM Powertrain’s build window. In 2015, GM Powertrain engineers gave the technical writer Hib Halverson a suspect period of July 2008 to March 2009 for guides with an oversize bore. GM didn’t say which 2009s fall inside it.
- Katech, which sells a guide repair, extends the problem to every LS7 and LS9 from 2006 on.
The complaints back up the worry. This site’s full reading finds 23 about LS7 valve guides on 2009s: 6 describe a valve breaking or the engine failing, 14 guides measured worn or heads repaired first, several at 5,000 to 15,000 miles, and 3 concern only. (The C6 guide’s quicker keyword count gives 16.) GM’s bulletin 13-06-01-001A (2015) adds a heads-off measuring procedure; NHTSA’s files hold no recall or special coverage for LS7 guides.
Treat a 2009 Z06 as unproven until the heads have been measured off the engine or the seller has receipts for the work, and price a car without them as if it needs the job, as the Z06 guide does.
Section 07
Side airbags or not: decoding a 2009’s VIN
The VIN plate sits at the driver’s side front corner of the instrument panel, per the owner’s manual. A 2009 Corvette’s VIN starts 1G1Y, and NHTSA’s decoder reads the next four characters like this:
- Fifth: the series. Y for a coupe or convertible, Z for a Z06, R for a ZR1.
- Sixth: the body. 2 for a coupe (and every Z06 and ZR1), 3 for a convertible.
- Seventh: the airbags. 5 for frontal airbags only, 6 with side airbags too. GM’s order guide made frontal-only airbags standard on the 1LT, the Z06’s 1LZ and the base ZR1, with side airbags coming in every group above them. That’s about 3,900 cars by Corvette Action Center’s counts (3,271 1LT, 424 1LZ and about 213 ZR1s without 3ZR).
- Eighth: the engine. W for the LS3, E for the LS7, R for the LS9.
Then come the check digit, a 9 for 2009 and a 5 for Bowling Green. So 1G1YY26W is a coupe with side airbags and 1G1YZ25E a 1LZ Z06 without them. A car sold as a Z06 or ZR1 needs the matching fifth and eighth characters; badges can be bought.
The option label. The Service Parts Identification label inside the glove box lists the VIN, paint and production options. Look for Z51, MZ6 or MX0 (the gearbox), NPP, F55, UPF (Bluetooth), and NU5 for the California emission system, which ties the car to recall 14523A.
Against a 2008: Bluetooth, audio buttons on every steering wheel, Cyber Gray or Blade Silver paint (a 2008 offered Machine Silver), and on a Z06 the spider wheels and the bigger oil tank. The bright crossed-flags surround is a weak tell: one owner’s new 2008 already had it. Against a 2010: a Z51 on a base coupe or convertible, no Grand Sport, no launch control, no Torch Red, and the chance of a 5 in seventh place.
Section 08
Twelve things to check on a 2009
- Run the VIN and match it to the ad and the option label: the series, the engine and that seventh character.
- Fill the tank past half, let the car sit in a closed space, then smell around the rear and look under the left-hand tank. Ask for the repair order if the left-hand module has been replaced, under 15682 or since.
- Watch the airbag light through a whole drive and while running the power seats through their travel.
- On a Z06, ask for head receipts or price in a heads-off inspection. Check the dry-sump oil the way the owner’s manual says: engine warmed to at least 175°F, then off for 5 to 20 minutes, then the dipstick on the oil tank. A cold reading means nothing.
- On a ZR1, ask about program 09160 and follow the checklist in the C6 ZR1 guide.
- On a manual, work the clutch several times: the pedal must come all the way back. Two 2009 owners describe a pedal that stayed down or went to the floor.
- On an automatic, use every lever position and paddle, cold and warm, and make sure the lever leaves Park every time.
- Drive until the engine is hot, then check the low beams. Ask whether the 14203 jumper was fitted.
- On a California car (NU5 on the label), ask for proof of the 14523A work.
- On a convertible, look where the top meets the windshield header for fabric pulling off its bracket.
- Check the battery and learn the door release. A 2009 that keeps going flat may need the 14648A fix. With no power, the doors open from inside by the handle on the floor beside each seat (manual); two owners told NHTSA they climbed out through the roof opening instead.
- Pay for an inspection by a shop that knows C6s, with the car on a lift so the tank area can be seen.
Fuel and fluids, per the manual: premium (91 or higher) is recommended for the LS3, 87 acceptable; the LS7 and LS9 want 91, or 93 for best performance (octane page). The capacities page gives 6.0 quarts (5.7 L) of oil with the filter for the LS3, where GM’s 2009 release said 5.5, and 10.5 quarts (9.9 L) for the LS7 and LS9. The EPA rates an LS3 manual at 16 mpg city and 26 highway, the automatic 15 and 25, the Z06 15 and 24 and the ZR1 14 and 20.
Section 09
What 2009s sell for: a Z06 market and few base cars
How much is a 2009 Corvette worth? That depends on which one. On Bring a Trailer (opens in new tab), 13 listings titled 2009 Chevrolet Corvette closed between January 1 and October 24, 2026, and 12 sold, nine Z06s and three ZR1s:
- Z06. Eight unmodified cars sold for $36,500 (a 2LZ, January) to $57,000 (a 31,000-mile 3LZ, March), a median of $48,750. A modified 5,000-mile 3LZ brought $80,500.
- ZR1. $90,000 in January, $88,500 for a 4,900-mile car in March and $130,000 for a 2,400-mile car in September: a median of $90,000 from three sales.
- Coupe and convertible. No sale in 2026. The one listing, a 10,000-mile six-speed coupe, was bid to $25,250 in August and didn’t sell.
Over the 12 months to October 24, 2026, the only base 2009 sold was a 15,000-mile 3LT six-speed convertible, at $28,500 in November 2025. Samples this small move with a single sale, and auction cars skew clean and low-mile.
Hagerty’s valuation tool, in archived copies, put a 2009 coupe in #3 (“good”) condition at $28,400 and a 2009 Z06 at $35,400, both on values dated April 1, 2025. Hagerty takes 10 percent off for an automatic, and seven in ten 2009 LS3 cars are automatics. The ZR1 guide gives Hagerty’s #3 figure for a 2009–2011 ZR1 as $75,100. These are what values did, not a forecast. The C5 vs C6 guide weighs a 2009 against the generation before, and the best Corvette years guide ranks the C6 years.
Section 10
A Z51 six-speed, 2LT or better: the 2009 to own
Go for the end of a line: a coupe with the Z51 package and the MZ6 six-speed, the last C6 Z51 before the Grand Sport took its place, with the 2.97 first gear, the bigger cross-drilled brakes and the extra cooling. Bowling Green built 1,460 Z51 six-speed coupes for 2009. Find one in a 2LT or higher group, for the side airbags and Bluetooth, with a repair order for the left-hand fuel module. Add the dual-mode exhaust if the seller has one, and you have America’s sports car at its most honest: 436 hp, three pedals, a car GM itself compared with the previous Z06, at base-car money.
The budget path is any LS3 2009 with the module receipt, automatic included: Hagerty values an automatic about 10 percent lower. If side airbags matter, skip a 1LT or a 1LZ Z06 (a 5 in the VIN’s seventh place).
The Z06 is the other buy, and the market agrees: a median $48,750 this year. It brings the 10.5-quart tank but sits inside GM’s 2008–2011 range for the valve guides, so it’s a car for a buyer with head receipts in hand or money set aside for a heads-off check. The ZR1 is its own purchase, made on the ZR1 guide’s terms.
Walk away from any 2009 that smells of fuel with no plan to fix it, or a Z06 whose seller shrugs at the word “guides.” The C6 buyer’s guide ranks every C6 year. Fill it past half, let it sit overnight, and if the garage smells of nothing but tires in the morning, take the long way home.
