2014 Corvette Stingray buyer's guide: the first C7, its one-year automatic, its record and 2026 prices
Published
No other C7 got the gearbox that went into most 2014 Corvettes. GM’s take rates put the six-speed paddle-shift automatic in 65 percent of the year’s 37,288 cars, and for 2015 it was gone, replaced by an eight-speed whose torque-converter shudder runs through the C7’s complaint file for years. NHTSA holds not one 2014 complaint that mentions shudder. So the first-year car a cautious buyer might skip turns out to be the only automatic C7 outside the shudder story.
That’s the 2014 in short: a first year with less first-year trouble than usual. It’s the first C7 (2014–2019), not a C6; the C6 (2005–2013) ended with the 2013. Every 2014 is a Stingray, coupe or convertible, and every one has the 6.2-liter LT1 V8: 455 hp, 460 with the performance exhaust. There was no 2014 Z06, Grand Sport or ZR1. Sticker prices, destination included: coupe $51,995, convertible $56,995. In 2026, 2014s sold on Bring a Trailer at a median $43,000. The C7 buyer’s guide covers the whole generation.
- Is 2014 a good year? On the records, yes: 1.7 complaints per 1,000 built, the lowest of any C7 model year, and five recalls, three of them for 2014 only. Its weak spot is the left fuel tank.
- Which to buy: a Z51, with either gearbox. Why is in the last section.

Section 01
The first Stingray, and what it replaced
GM began shipping the Stingray on September 18, 2013, with about 1,000 built for customers, its release said (opens in new tab). Bowling Green had spent $131 million getting ready, about $52 million of it on a body shop so the plant could build the aluminum frame itself for the first time. GM put that frame at 99 pounds lighter and 57 percent stiffer than the C6’s.
The rest of the car was just as new:
- The LT1. A 6.2-liter pushrod V8 with direct injection, variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, which shuts off four cylinders at light load (a Corvette first, GM said). GM called 455 hp and 460 lb-ft “the highest standard power ratings ever for the Corvette.”
- Two gearboxes. A seven-speed manual with Active Rev Match, which matches engine speed to the next gear on upshifts and downshifts, or the six-speed automatic with paddles.
- Carbon fiber. A carbon hood on every car and a removable carbon roof on every coupe.
- The convertible. Its power top works at up to 30 mph and from the key fob.
- The cabin. Twin 8-inch screens, a rear camera, keyless start, a Bose system and a five-position Drive Mode Selector: Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track.
It was named 2014 North American Car of the Year, 211 points to the Mazda3’s 185, the first Corvette to win since 1998. The two generations before it are compared in the C5 vs C6 guide.

From GM’s spec sheet (opens in new tab), the owner’s manual and fueleconomy.gov. GM’s launch figure was 17/29 for the manual; the EPA’s current method says 28. The car is 176.9 inches long on a 106.7-inch wheelbase, with a 50/50 weight split.
What’s the top speed of a 2014 Corvette? No GM top-speed figure for the 2014 Stingray turned up in its spec sheet or releases, so this guide doesn’t print one. The owner’s manual’s Z51 track settings give a maximum of 174 mph for that setup, which isn’t the same thing.
Capacities. The manual lists 7.0 quarts of oil with the filter, or 9.8 with Z51 (GM’s spec sheet says 9.75), 11.3 quarts of coolant and an 18.5-gallon tank (PDF page 336).
Fuel. Follow the manual, not the spec sheet. GM’s 2014 spec sheet called premium recommended, not required, but the 2014 owner’s manual asks for 91 octane or higher and warns that lower octane may damage the engine. It’s the only C7 manual without an allowance for 87, as the C7 guide notes.
Section 03
The one-year automatic and the seven-speed manual
The automatic is a six-speed with paddles, 2014 only (RPO MYC; RPO is GM’s three-character regular production option code), and it’s the year’s quiet advantage. Owners across CorvetteForum threads from 2016 to 2022 rate it highly; one 2018 reply called it bulletproof. The record agrees: of the 63 complaints NHTSA holds for the 2014, none mentions shudder, against about 10 for the 2015, the eight-speed’s first year. One owner did report a 2014 automatic that overheated and was replaced within a day of delivery. Automatics have a 2.56 axle, or 2.73 with Z51.
The manual came two ways: MEP with standard ratios and MEL with the Z51’s closer ones, both on a 3.42 axle. GM’s take rates give manuals 35 percent, about 13,200 cars: roughly 4,139 MEP and 9,061 MEL. Owners called the shift notchy until broken in. GM items that touch it:
- Service update 13417 (January 2014), for wet-sump cars with the MEP manual only. In sustained hard right-hand turns in a low gear at high revs, the engine’s protection mode cut power to prevent oil starvation, as designed, but without telling the driver. GM reprogrammed the modules to add a warning. A Z51’s dry sump is the oiling built for that kind of driving.
- PI1367 (December 2014): a manual that won’t stay in seventh. Check the shifter adjustment first, then the transmission’s inverter part number.
- Shift complaints on any C7 manual: bulletin 19-NA-073 and the crankshaft end-play bulletin 19-NA-217, both in the C7 guide.
Break-in matters on a low-mile car. For the first 500 miles the manual says no full-throttle starts and no more than 4,000 rpm, and no track events for the first 1,500. GM later added an oil change right after the 500-mile break-in for 2014–2015 Z51 dry-sump cars (PIP5290). A seller of a 400-mile car should know whether that was done.
Section 04
Trims, options and colors: how 2014s were built
The figures are Bowling Green’s 2014 data as Corvette Action Center publishes it and GM’s take rates as Corvette Blogger reported them in August 2014. Model totals are exact; option counts are GM’s percentages multiplied out, so approximate.
| 2014 model | Built |
|---|---|
| Stingray coupe | 11,134 |
| Stingray coupe with Z51 | 15,431 |
| Stingray convertible | 5,043 |
| Stingray convertible with Z51 | 5,680 |
| Total | 37,288 |
That’s 37,288: 26,565 coupes and 10,723 convertibles. When GM announced it, Corvette Blogger noted that only 1985 (39,729), 2005 and 2007 had built more in the years since 1985; the 2016 later topped them all.
Trims. 3LT, an $8,005 package, was the favorite at about 19,725 cars, ahead of 2LT (about 12,529) and 1LT (about 4,736).
Z51. For $2,800 the Z51 package added the dry-sump oil system (the oil lives in a separate tank, not the pan), the bigger slotted brakes, the 19- and 20-inch wheels, closer gearing, an electronic limited-slip differential, differential and transmission cooling and an aero package. 56 percent of buyers took it. The base car’s suspension has no rear stabilizer bar, GM’s bulletins note.
Magnetic Ride. Magnetic Selective Ride Control (GM’s adjustable damping) with Performance Traction Management cost $1,795 and came only with Z51; about 36 percent of all 2014s have it (RPO FE4).
The rest. The dual-mode performance exhaust ($1,195, RPO NPP) went on about 84 percent of cars. Competition Sport seats were $2,495 (about 2,573 built), a visible carbon fiber roof $1,995. About 6,973 coupes got the transparent roof. Black wheels were a $495 option and went on 48 percent of Z51s.
Colors. Torch Red led (about 7,197), then Arctic White (6,153), Black (5,929), Cyber Gray (4,064), Laguna Blue (3,281), Crystal Red (3,020), Velocity Yellow (2,125), Blade Silver (2,088), Night Race Blue (1,827) and Lime Rock Green (1,566), all approximate.

Section 05
Premiere Editions: 500 coupes, 550 convertibles
The Premiere Edition (RPO SRZ) couldn’t be ordered: GM allocated the cars to its top dealers.
- Coupes: 500, all Laguna Blue with the 3LT Brownstone interior, Z51, Magnetic Ride, the performance exhaust, 19- and 20-inch chrome wheels, the carbon fiber roof, suede and carbon interior packages, a numbered dash plaque and matched luggage. All but car 001 had the seven-speed manual, Corvette Blogger reported from the reveal in June 2013. They were allocated to dealers in the US, Canada and Mexico.
- Convertibles: 550, all Lime Rock Green, again Brownstone 3LT with Z51, Magnetic Ride and the performance exhaust, at $77,450. GM announced them in November 2013. No GM price for the coupe could be found.
Premiere Editions have their own VIN sequence, starting at 300001 according to GM’s John Fitzpatrick as Corvette Blogger relayed it, with the number repeated on the dash plaque. In 2026, five sold on Bring a Trailer at a median $52,000, two of them under 1,000 miles at $63,500 and $74,500.
Section 06
What a 2014 doesn’t have
Most of what came later is equipment, not fixes:
- 2015: the eight-speed automatic, the 650 hp Z06 and GM’s Performance Data Recorder. A “2014 Z06” doesn’t exist: a 2014 VIN has E as its 10th character and 7 as its 8th, and the Z06’s LT4 is code 6.
- 2016: the front curb-view camera on upper trims, power-cinching hatch and trunk latches, and Apple CarPlay, all in the 2016 guide. Owners in three threads name the missing camera among a 2014’s lacks.
- 2017: the wide-body Grand Sport.
- 2018: the Z51’s 19- and 20-inch wheels became standard.
- 2019: the 755 hp ZR1, covered with the rest of the final year in the 2019 guide. There was no 2014 ZR1: the C6 ZR1 ended with the 2013.
Section 07
Recalls, GM programs and the 2014’s complaint file
NHTSA, the US road safety agency, held 63 owner complaints (opens in new tab) against the 2014 on October 23, 2026: 1.7 per 1,000 built, against 1.9 for 2015 and 2.6 for 2016. The C7 total that day was 688 (the table in the C7 guide has every year). Two of the 63 carry another car’s VIN. The best Corvette years guide calls it the cleanest long record of any model year, and owners of 2014s at 25,000 to 63,000 miles report nothing or next to nothing, thread after thread.
Five recalls
Three are 2014-only and cover build windows between November 2013 and April 2014:
- 14V342000: cars built November 20, 2013 to March 25, 2014 with the optional sport seats, which didn’t meet GM’s own standard for protecting an unbelted young child. The passenger side-impact air bag was replaced.
- 14V377000: cars built February 12 to March 14, 2014. A bad weld could let a rear shock tube separate from its bracket, suddenly changing the handling. Both rear shocks were replaced.
- 14V299000: cars built April 23 to 25, 2014. The air bag module could short and switch off the air bags and belt pretensioners. Module replaced.
The other two cover many GM models. Recall 16V651000 (reported September 8, 2016) reflashed the air bag module on 2014–2017 Corvettes, whose self-test could stop the front air bags deploying; 17V437000 (July 10, 2017) redid cars that didn’t get the full update.
The left fuel tank
This is the 2014’s real weak point. By this site’s reading, 16 of the 63 complaints are about fuel smell or leaks, the biggest single theme: gas pooled under the driver-side tank, a garage that smells of fuel, a collapsed filler neck tube, a cracked tank. The 2015, by comparison, has about 4. GM answered with three programs:
- Special Coverage 16009 (October 2016): 2014–2015 left tanks leaking at the inlet check valve, with fuel odor or drips when the gauge reads above half. The tank was replaced, for 5 years or 60,000 miles. It has run out on every 2014.
- Special Coverage 17469 (opens in new tab) (April 2018): cracks in the left tank’s fuel pump module flange on 2014–2017 cars GM lists by VIN, which can cause fuel odor, fuel on the ground or a check-engine light below half a tank. The dealer replaces the module, for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the in-service date. On a 2014 that has run out, except on the rare car first sold in late October 2016 or later. Three 2014 owners filed complaints from 2024 to 2026 after finding their cover had ended on time, not mileage; one says the repair cost $5,300.
- Emission recall 14689 (February 2015): an anti-siphon grid in the fuel fill pipe, out of position, could slide into the tank. GM replaced the pipe on about 14,633 US cars. Owners call it the fuel filler recall. It isn’t a safety recall, so NHTSA’s lookup may not show it: ask a dealer.
GM’s PIP5188 (June 2014) adds fuel odor from the rear with the EVAP canister full of raw fuel, and tells dealers to inspect the connections inside both tanks and at the crossover pipe.

The screen and the front tires
The infotainment drew more GM fixes than anything else on the 2014. GM’s PIC5934 (November 2013) described a radio display that blinks or scrolls “like an old TV,” promised a permanent fix in February 2014 and passed on the Corvette team’s apology; the PI1126 series followed for blank screens and the rear camera, and two radio reprograms came as late as April 2016. About 8 complaints describe it, and owners in three threads repeat it.
Front tires that hop or chatter in a tight, slow turn, worse in the cold, are normal, GM said in bulletin 14-03-10-001 (opens in new tab) (February 2014): imperfect Ackermann steering geometry (how the two front wheels’ angles differ in a turn), sticky tires and a turning circle two feet tighter than the C6’s. Four complaints describe it.
Launch-year programs to check by VIN
- 13384 (November 2013): some rear differentials shipped with too little fluid, which can bring a whine or bearing noise. Dealers checked, filled and replaced a whining unit. In effect until November 30, 2015.
- 14572 (September 2014): 738 convertibles worldwide whose transmission cooler pipe might not be sealed. Leaking oil could cost propulsion or smolder on the exhaust.
- 14248 and 14481 (October 2014): a missing parking brake bracket nut on manual convertibles, and spark plug wire installation.
Smaller GM notes cover a rattle at 30–40 mph from the belt tensioner (PIP5185), reduced power and a check-engine light on a cold start (PI1532A, an ECM update) and oil in the air box of Z51 cars (PIP5165A). Two complaints describe the power steering assist failing; no recall covers the 2014, though a “Service Power Steering Gear” message on a hot track day has its own fix on 2014–2018 cars, a steering-gear cooling duct. Four more describe engine failures (owner statements) with no pattern and no GM action. Generation-wide items, AFM lifters above all, are in the C7 guide.
Section 08
Reading a 2014’s VIN, option label and plaque
The VIN plate is at the driver’s side of the dashboard, read through the windshield. On a 2014, by the owner’s manual and NHTSA’s VIN decoder:
- 1G1Y opens it: Chevrolet, Corvette.
- 5th character, trim and Z51: A or B for 1LT, C or D for 2LT, F for 3LT; H for a Z51 1LT, J or K for a Z51 2LT, L or M for a Z51 3LT. The most common start among the VINs in NHTSA’s 2014 complaints is 1G1YM2D7, a Z51 3LT coupe.
- 6th: 2 for a coupe, 3 for a convertible.
- 8th: 7, the LT1.
- 10th: E for 2014. 11th: 5 for Bowling Green.
The Service Parts Identification label sits under the carpet in the hatch or trunk area, passenger side, and lists every production option (manual, PDF page 335). Look for Z51, Z52 (dry sump), G96 (electronic limited-slip), FE3 or FE4, NPP, MEP, MEL or MYC, and SRZ on a Premiere Edition. GM said in 2014 that Z51 wheels and tires, the Z51’s rear bar and the performance exhaust couldn’t be added to a car built without them. A non-Z51 car on 19- and 20-inch wheels, or a car without NPP on its label that has the dual-mode exhaust, has been modified.
For a Premiere Edition, the label, the color (Laguna Blue coupe or Lime Rock Green convertible), the Brownstone interior, a VIN serial from 300001 and the numbered plaque should all agree.
Section 09
On the lot with a 2014: ten checks
- Recalls and programs. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup (opens in new tab), then ask a Chevrolet dealer for the 14689 fill pipe, 13384, 14572 on a convertible and whether 17469 still applies.
- The left tank. Fill it above half, park it and smell around the driver-side rear. Fuel smell, drips or a check-engine light below half a tank points to the tank or pump module, almost always at the owner’s cost now.
- The screen. Cold start, then let it run: no flicker, rolling or blank screen, and a rear camera that comes on in reverse.
- The differential. No whine or bearing noise on the drive.
- An automatic. Shifts clean when warm, no temperature warning after a long drive.
- A manual. Every gear, seventh included, and no grind into second. Ask whether the torque tube or transmission has been out: GM warns that misalignment on reinstallation can wear the crankshaft thrust bearing.
- Dry-sump oil. On a Z51, check the level only the manual’s way: warm to at least 175°F, shut off, checked 5 to 10 minutes later. A cold reading can show no oil at all. Look in the air box too.
- The label against the ad. Trim, Z51, Magnetic Ride and exhaust as claimed, and the right 5th VIN character.
- Tire hop in a tight, slow, cold turn is normal by GM’s bulletin: no reason to walk away or haggle.
- A pre-purchase inspection by a shop that knows C7s.
For a car that sits, the battery and battery maintainer guides cover the C7’s battery under the cargo floor and the one outlet GM names for a maintainer.
Section 10
What 2014s brought on Bring a Trailer in 2026
From Bring a Trailer’s C7 results (opens in new tab), listings titled “2014 Chevrolet Corvette,” January 1 to October 20, 2026 (this site’s count):
| 2014 Stingray | Sold | Median |
|---|---|---|
| All | 21 of 23 listed | $43,000 |
| Coupes | 12 | $43,000 |
| Convertibles | 9 | $42,500 |
| Premiere Editions | 5 | $52,000 |
| All but the Premiere Editions | 16 | $41,807 |
That’s a median $43,000 (21 sales, January 1 to October 20, 2026), with a range of $26,000 to $74,500 and the middle half between $39,125 and $50,000. The cheapest was a 3LT Z51 seven-speed convertible with no mileage in its title. Bring a Trailer leans to kept, low-mile cars: 16 of the 21 titles gave a mileage, from 36 to 33,000 miles. Over April to September, 15 sold at a median $43,000, the figure the C7 vs C8 guide gives. Six 2015 Stingrays sold this year at a median $41,825, a small sample.
Ordinary-mileage cars cost less. One owner reported paying $38,500 for a 2014 Z51 3LT manual convertible in October 2020, and another called 2014s affordable in the $30,000s in November 2024 (owner statements). No Hagerty or classic.com figure for the 2014 alone could be read; the C7 guide gives Hagerty’s all-C7 figures. These are past sales, not a prediction.
Section 11
Which 2014 to buy: a Z51, either gearbox
Buy a 2014 Stingray Z51, coupe or convertible, with records and a clean dealer check on the left tank. The Z51 brings the dry sump, the bigger slotted brakes, the closer gearing and the electronic limited-slip, and it’s the only way to a 2014 with Magnetic Ride. More than half were 3LTs, so the trim is easy to find.
The gearbox is the real choice, and for once both answers are good. Take the seven-speed manual for the fun, and the Z51’s MEL gearing with it. Or take the six-speed automatic, the one C7 automatic with no shudder file and no fluid-exchange receipt to chase. On the budget path, a 2LT without Z51 has the same 455 hp LT1. Keep it a street car: its wet sump is why GM’s update 13417 added a warning when hard cornering trips the engine’s protection mode.
A Premiere Edition costs about $10,000 more than the other 2014s at the medians; buy one for the color, the plaque and the numbers, not the drive. Pass on any 2014 that smells of fuel with a full tank, on a screen that flickers unless the price allows for it, and on any car the dealer’s VIN check finds with open recalls and no answer why.
Get those right and about $43,000 buys the first C7, the 2014 North American Car of the Year: 455 hp of America’s sports car for about $9,000 under the base coupe’s 2013 sticker. The rest of the generation is in the C7 buyer’s guide.
