A silver emblem with a “50” and crossed flags sits on the nose and the tail of every 2003 Corvette. GM fitted it to all 35,469, coupes, convertibles and Z06s alike, so it proves the model year and nothing more. The 50th Anniversary Edition was a $5,000 package on top: Anniversary Red paint, a Shale interior, champagne-painted wheels and the new magnetic shocks. Bowling Green built 11,632, about one 2003 in three, and not one is a Z06.

That package tipped the year’s numbers. For 2003, and for no other model year of the C5 (1997–2004), the Kentucky plant built more convertibles than regular coupes: 14,022 against 12,812, and 7,547 of those convertibles wear Anniversary Red. (Count the Z06, also a fixed-roof car, and fixed roofs still win, 21,447 to 14,022.)

Three other things set a 2003 apart: Magnetic Selective Ride Control (F55), more standard equipment, and a fuel system GM changed partway through the year, which decides how a 2003 should be inspected. The engines carried over: 350 hp LS1 (coupe, convertible), 405 hp LS6 (Z06).

The short answers to what shoppers ask first:

  • Is a 2003 a C5? Yes, the seventh of eight C5 model years. No C5 wore the Stingray name; it came back on the C7.
  • Is 2003 a good year? By owner complaints to NHTSA per car built, the best of the run: 112, or 3.2 per 1,000 built, the fewest of any C5 year. The C5 buyer’s guide names 2002 and 2003 the years to shop first.
  • Common problems? The column lock on six-speed cars, fuel smell on later builds, the cost of keeping magnetic shocks alive, and valve springs on the Z06.
  • What is one worth? Bring a Trailer’s 2026 sales: median $31,222 for a Z06, $21,400 for a coupe or convertible.

Section 01

Three changes for 2003, and what carried over

GM announced the year in April 2002, and its release (opens in new tab) billed Magnetic Selective Ride Control as “the industry’s fastest and most powerful real-time damping suspension.” The same text opens GM’s 2003 vehicle information kit, in this site’s manual library.

The new standard equipment on the coupe and convertible: fog lamps, sport seats, a power passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a parcel net and luggage shade on the coupe. Most 2002s had them as options anyway, so on a used car they prove little. The kit’s list of what was new (headed “New For 2002,” a GM typo) adds two smaller items:

  • Paint. Medium Spiral Gray Metallic replaced Pewter, and Anniversary Red arrived for one year. Magnetic Red, a 2002 color, sat 2003 out and returned for 2004.
  • Child seats. Child seat hooks on the passenger seat, used with the passenger air bag off switch in the glovebox.

Everything else carried over from 2002: both engines’ ratings, the gear ratios, wheel and tire sizes, dimensions and curb weights (see 2003 specifications by model). The 2002 was the year the Z06 reached 405 hp; the 2004 brought the Commemorative Editions, revised Z06 shocks and four color changes.

Section 02

The 50th Anniversary Edition, and how to prove one

Dark red 2003 Corvette 50th Anniversary Edition convertible with the top down, parked at a street car show and seen from the front left, with a light tan interior, champagne five-spoke wheels and a 50 badge on the front fender.

GM made the Anniversary “available only during the 2003 model year on coupe and convertible models.” The kit lists Anniversary Red paint, special badging, a Shale interior with a matching instrument panel and console, champagne-painted wheels with their own center emblems, embroidered badges on the seats and floor mats, padded door armrests and grips, and a Shale top on the convertible. Underneath was a regular LS1 car with Magnetic Selective Ride Control included.

Corvette Action Center lists it as package 1SC at $5,000, built on the $1,200 1SB group: head-up display (readouts projected on the windshield), auto-dimming mirrors, memory settings, Twilight Sentinel (automatic headlamps) and a power telescoping column. Bowling Green built 11,632: 4,085 coupes and 7,547 convertibles.

  • The paint is a tri-coat. Anniversary Red Metallic (94U) is a pearl tri-coat, WA 820K in GM’s paint system, per Corvette Action Center. Touch-ups are harder, and a badly matched repaint shows in sunlight.
  • The wheels are aluminum. Owners have long argued they’re magnesium, but GM calls them champagne-painted and the option text reads “50th Anniversary Aluminum Wheels.” The magnesium wheel was a separate option, N73, on 293 cars. Matching champagne replacements are hard to find, owners say, so check that all four agree.
  • The pace car wasn’t for sale. GM’s kit says a special 50th Anniversary 2003 paced the Indianapolis 500 in May 2002, the fifth time a Corvette led the field. The Pace Car Registry says it was an early-build coupe, three were prepared and no replicas were sold. Hagerty lists a “50th Anniversary Pace Car” convertible at $24,400 without explaining it; a 2003 sold as a pace car needs papers.

Proving one. The trap first: a red 2003 with “50” emblems isn’t necessarily an Anniversary, because every 2003 has them. Owners in a 2016 CorvetteForum thread (opens in new tab) add that only Anniversary cars carry badges on the sides, an owner observation rather than a GM statement. Then check:

  1. The glovebox label. Paint 94U, Anniversary Red, not Torch Red’s 70U. Then the package: Corvette Action Center and owners call it 1SC, while GM’s RPO list (RPO is GM’s regular production option code) in the kit names Z25, “Appearance Package 50th Anniversary, Limited Edition.” Which one a label shows wasn’t confirmed for this guide, so accept either beside 94U.
  2. F55 on the label. Every Anniversary has it.
  3. Inside and out. Shale leather and dash, the embroidered badges, champagne wheels, and a Shale top on a convertible.

Paint, badges and wheels can be added later; the label is the paper that has to agree.

Section 03

Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the F55 option

The shocks were the engineering story of 2003. Each holds magneto-rheological fluid, and a current through a coil in the damper piston changes its consistency, so damping varies continuously. A controller reads speed, body pitch, steering position and wheel travel and adjusts each shock within milliseconds, by the kit’s service description. The driver gets a console knob with TOUR and SPORT (owner’s manual).

It wasn’t the first adjustable damping on a C5: the 2002 offered F45 Selective Real Time Damping at $1,695, and F55 took its place at the same price. It went into 14,992 2003s, 56 percent of coupes and convertibles; 3,360 of those buyers ordered it without the Anniversary. It came neither on the Z06 nor with the $395 Z51 package, whose 1.13-inch anti-roll bars (kit) went into 2,592 cars.

The plastic in the shocks. F55 cars left Bowling Green with the suspension tightened down on a temporary plastic stuffer in each damper, and GM bulletin 022003 (February 20, 2003) and several related notices told dealers to remove them before delivery. One owner told NHTSA in 2003 that a new convertible arrived with them still in. GM’s bulletin 11212002 adds that with the ignition off the dampers give very little damping, so a parked car that bounces freely isn’t broken.

When it fails. SERVICE RIDE CONTROL means a fault; with SHOCKS INOPERATIVE and MAXIMUM SPEED 80 MPH beside it, the shocks have failed soft. No 2003 NHTSA complaint describes a failed magnetic shock. Cost is the issue: one owner put a replacement at about $1,000 per shock in 2022, genuine GM units were hard to find by 2025, and several owners had the system switched off with a Tech 2 scan tool and fitted conventional shocks (CorvetteForum, 2022–2025; the years-to-avoid guide has both routes). Rule out the cheap cause first: GM’s 2019 notice PI0430C covers a suspension connector that isn’t fully seated.

A 2003 without F55 isn’t the lesser car to own. It’s the simpler one.

Section 04

The fuel system GM changed mid-year

GM bulletin 021903, dated February 19, 2003, told dealers about “a new fuel system that consists of new tank and fuel line assemblies,” identified on the glovebox label by RPO FFS. GM’s TechLink article (opens in new tab) says it came “partway through model year 2003,” designed for the coming LEV 2 (low-emission vehicle) rules by moving components and lines inside the tanks. A flexible metal crossover hose replaced a rubber one that let hydrocarbons escape, the fuel filter and primary pressure regulator moved inside the left tank, and the pump gained flow. “For 2003 Corvettes only,” the system carries the FFS code; every 2004 has it, but owners report 2004 labels don’t show the code.

Where the change falls. No GM document found for this guide gives the starting VIN or date. The number owners pass around, VIN 35114929, a car built November 25, 2002, traces to a 2006 CorvetteForum post (opens in new tab) whose writer said he had read it; later threads repeat it. Treat it as one second-hand owners’ figure, which would put roughly the first 15,000 2003s on the old system (this site’s arithmetic). Owners with July 2002 builds report the early system, which fits. The label settles it, and owners describe a physical tell: the early system’s fuel filter sits outside the tanks, under the car.

Why it matters. The 2004’s fuel leaks come from this design. GM’s special coverage 10150 and NHTSA’s investigation PE10-015 covered 2004s built from about October 22, 2003 to March 19, 2004, and named no 2003; the 2004 guide has the story and the repair bills. Owners disagree on whether FFS 2003s leak the same way (CorvetteForum, 2016). The 2003’s own file is light: nine complaints mention fuel, eight of them smell or a leaking tank, filed 2010 to 2019, one owner calling it a known issue on later-VIN 2003s. NHTSA masks the serial, so whether those are FFS cars can’t be told. Give an FFS 2003 the same sniff test after a fill-up as a 2004.

The early system has its own weak points (clamps, the rubber crossover, sender gaskets) and shares the C5 fuel gauge story in the C5 guide; GM bulletin 050604041 (June 2005), for gauges that read empty with fuel aboard, covers 2003s. Building for big power? One owner says the early system feeds more of it, a claim to put to your tuner.

Bodies, gearboxes and the Z06

Bowling Green built 35,469: 12,812 coupes, 14,022 convertibles, 8,635 Z06s, or 36, 40 and 24 percent. The total was 298 below 2002’s; the Z06 count rose by 338.

The four-speed automatic was standard on the coupe and convertible and went into 18,244 of them, 68 percent, on the standard 2.73 axle (8,459) or the $395 3.15 (9,785). The $915 six-speed went into 8,590; with the Z06s, 17,225 cars are manuals, every one on a 3.42 axle.

The Z06. The biggest of the C5 Z06’s four years changed little from 2002: the 405 hp LS6, the M12 six-speed, the FE4 suspension, a standard head-up display, and Goodyear Eagle F1 SC tires that aren’t run-flats, with no tire pressure monitor (owner’s manual). Five colors (Black, Torch Red, Millennium Yellow, Electron Blue, Quicksilver), no Anniversary package, no F55. Motor Trend timed a 2003 Z06 at 4.29 seconds to 60 mph.

Its year-specific risk is the valve springs. An owner’s study of self-reported failures puts 67 of its 177 on 2003s; early 2003 builds (last five VIN digits below 09000) fall in its group about 17 times as likely to report one as a 2001 or 2004, later 2003s more than 3 times. One 2003 NHTSA complaint describes a spring that broke at 30,000 miles and destroyed the engine. No GM bulletin or recall covers it; the C5 Z06 guide has the study and the tests.

The coupe and convertible carry no spare and no jack (manual). Wheel nut torque is 100 lb-ft (140 N·m). The parts list names a PF44 oil filter and 41-974 spark plugs (ACDelco, OEM) and no battery; the battery guide covers what a C5 takes.

How quick. No GM 0–60 mph figure for the 2003 turned up. GM’s 2001 spec sheet gave the same 350 hp LS1 4.5 seconds with the six-speed, 5.0 with the automatic and 175 mph; GM’s 2002 releases gave the 405 hp Z06 3.9 seconds and 171 mph.

Where GM’s papers disagree, go by the owner’s manual. It gives the tank as 18.0 gallons, as the kit does; Corvette Action Center’s spec page prints 2002’s 18.5 (the Z06 guide agrees on 18.0). The kit’s spec page asks for 93 octane; the manual recommends 91 or higher and allows 87 with slightly reduced acceleration. The kit puts the LS1’s peak at 5,600 rpm on one page and 5,200 on another, so the table leaves rpm out. The manual’s plug gap is 0.060 in and its coolant capacity 12.6 qt, against 0.040 in and 11.5 or 11.8 qt in parts of the kit.

Options, colors and what they cost new

Corvette Action Center’s production page (opens in new tab) lists $43,475 for a coupe, $50,375 for a convertible and $51,275 for a Z06, plus a $670 destination charge, without saying whether the prices include it; no GM price list for 2003 turned up for this guide. Its option counts:

Section 08

The 2003’s record: one recall, 112 complaints

NHTSA lists one GM campaign for the 2003, the column lock: 04V060000 (GM 04006) (opens in new tab), 126,624 cars across 1997–2004. The electronic lock locks the steering when the key comes out; if it failed to unlock, the fuel was meant to cut off, but with low voltage the car could be driven with the steering locked. On a 2003, GM’s bulletin covered six-speed cars and export automatics, so no US 2003 automatic was in it, and the owner’s manual marks both lock messages, SERVICE COLUMN LOCK and PULL KEY - WAIT 10 SEC, “(Manual Transmission Only).” GM’s Special Policy 05081 ended on February 29, 2008.

NHTSA’s complaint file (opens in new tab) held 112 complaints on October 22, 2026. Beside the years either side, with this site’s approximate keyword counts:

Take the column lock out and the 2003 falls to 2.7 per 1,000. By this site’s reading, about 25 of the 112 aren’t about a 2003 Corvette at all (22 describe other Chevrolets, from Tahoes to Cavaliers); the site keeps NHTSA’s count so its C5 pages compare like with like, and the ranking holds either way. All 16 column lock complaints are on Z06 or convertible VINs, and at least four say the lock failed again after recall work. About eight describe Active Handling faults, from unwanted braking to a car darting across lanes.

Bulletins for 2003 alone are few: the fuel system (021903), the shock stuffers (022003), the parked-damping notice (11212002) and a deck lid not flush with the left quarter panel (030866001). Shared ones add a six-speed fluid leak at the rear (030729006, 2002–2003) and noise and brake dust from the Z06’s front pads (070303). The generation-wide items, from the harmonic balancer to cracked wheel spokes, are in the C5 buyer’s guide.

Section 09

Reading a 2003’s VIN and glovebox label

The VIN. On GM’s VIN chart, every 2003 starts 1G1YY. The sixth character is the body (1 Z06, 2 coupe, 3 convertible), the eighth the engine (G for the LS1, S for the LS6), the tenth 3 for 2003, the eleventh 5 for Bowling Green, then the six-digit sequence; a Z06 has to read 1 and S. The last five digits are also stamped on the rear of the front sill tie bar, and the engine and transmission carry a partial VIN that should end in the same sequence (kit).

The labels. The driver’s door edge label gives the build month (kit), which places a car against the owners’ FFS date and the spring study’s cut points. The glovebox label lists every production option by RPO code with the paint (owner’s manual): look for 94U with 1SC or Z25, F55, FFS, Z51, MM6 or M30, and N73.

Against a 2002 or 2004. The “50” emblems mark a 2003, and so does Anniversary Red. Medium Spiral Gray rules out a 2002; Pewter, Magnetic Red, Arctic White, Machine Silver and Le Mans Blue rule out a 2003. FFS on the label points to a 2003. The tenth VIN character settles it.

Section 10

Before you sign for a 2003

  1. The glovebox label. FFS, F55, and 94U with the package code on an Anniversary; then the rest against the ad.
  2. Fuel, on an FFS car. Fill up, sniff around the rear, look for damp spots, and watch the gauge on the drive.
  3. Magnetic shocks. No ride control message, and the knob changes the ride. A deleted system should be documented and priced as a car without F55.
  4. Column lock, on a six-speed. Cycle the key several times; ask for the recall paperwork and anything done since.
  5. Valve springs, on a Z06. The receipt, or the last five VIN digits and a price that covers the job.
  6. Warning lights. No ABS, traction or SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING message during or after the drive.
  7. An Anniversary’s details. Even paint in sunlight, four matching champagne wheels, Shale leather, and the Shale top on a convertible.
  8. Wheels. Cracks at the base of every spoke.
  9. Tires. No spare and no jack: if a coupe or convertible no longer has run-flats, ask what it carries instead.
  10. Records and a lift. Service history, then a C5-savvy shop with the C5 guide’s list in hand.

Section 11

2003 prices in 2026: auctions and Hagerty

From January 1 to October 21, 2026, Bring a Trailer (opens in new tab) sold seven stock 2003 Z06s for $18,750 to $36,200, a median of $31,222 by this site’s count. Stock coupes and convertibles: 15 listings, 11 sales, $14,000 to $50,000, a median of $21,400. Nine of the eleven were Anniversary Editions (median $22,750), and mileage split them: those with 14,000 miles or more, or none given, brought $14,000 to $22,750; the four under 1,500 miles, $29,750 to $50,000. Only two regular 2003s sold, at $14,000 and $14,750. Small samples, and auction cars skew clean and low-mile.

Hagerty’s valuation tool (opens in new tab), in February 2026 captures, gave a 2003 in #3 (“good”) condition $17,000 coupe, $18,600 convertible, the same as the 2002 and 2004; a 50th Anniversary $20,100 as a coupe, up 5.2 percent in a year, and $22,400 as a convertible. The coupe’s page takes 10 percent off for an automatic. It lists no Z06 (the Z06 guide has Hagerty’s 2022 figures), and classic.com offered no 2003 figure this guide could read. These are past sales and valuations, not a forecast.

Section 12

The 2003 to own: an Anniversary with papers

Buy a 50th Anniversary Edition with driver miles and its papers in order. It’s the year’s own car: one-year paint, the Shale cabin, the champagne wheels and the magnetic shocks, on the C5 with the cleanest record of the eight. It’s also the easiest 2003 to find, and in 2026 a driver-mile Anniversary sold for regular-car money. Make it a convertible, since most were and Hagerty values it above the coupe, and prove it on the label: 94U, the package code, F55.

Then sort by build. An early car without FFS dodges the tank question; an FFS car that passes the sniff test is fine. The shocks have to work, or the deletion has to be honest and priced in.

On a budget, a regular automatic without F55 is the simplest 2003 there is: no magnetic shocks to keep alive, and no column lock recall to chase. If the budget stretches, stretch for the Z06, with a receipt for new valve springs; the C5 Z06 guide explains why its own pick is a 2004.

The best Corvette years guide and the C5 vs C6 guide both put 2003 near the top. Fifty years after the first one, GM built America’s sports car with the cleanest record of its generation and painted a third of them for the party. Find one with the right label and the party’s still on.
