C8 Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X buyer's guide (2025–present): 1,064 hp, the records on file and what one costs
Published
The quickest car Car and Driver has ever tested wears a bowtie. In June 2026 the magazine retested a Corvette ZR1X (opens in new tab) and got 60 mph in 1.8 seconds and the quarter mile in 8.9 at 155 mph, the first car it had timed to 60 in 1.8 and the first under 9.0 in the quarter. At the top of the C8 (2020–present) range, the ZR1 (2025–present) puts a 5.5-liter twin-turbo LT7 V8, 1,064 hp, behind the seats, and the ZR1X (2026–present) makes 1,250 hp with a 186 hp front motor added.
GM calls the ZR1X a hypercar. The window sticker says Corvette. Neither car is old enough for a long record, so here is the buyer’s file: GM’s claims against the tests, the recalls and restrictions, a resale rule that can void a warranty, and what used ones sell for.
- Drive: the ZR1 is rear-drive. The ZR1X drives its front wheels up to 160 mph from a 1.9 kWh battery charged by regeneration: a hybrid with no plug.
- 0–60 mph: GM says 2.3 s for a ZR1 and 1.89 s for a ZR1X, both with ZTK; the quickest independent time is 1.8 s (ZR1X, Car and Driver retest), timed differently.
- Street legal: yes. GM’s record ZR1X runs used a “production 50-state street-legal engine calibration”.
- How many: 180 ZR1s for 2025, pre-production cars included (National Corvette Museum); for 2026, about 1,553 ZR1s and 270 ZR1Xs by an owner-run tracker.
- Price: new, October 2026: $197,495 ZR1, $227,695 ZR1X, with destination, before gas-guzzler tax. On Bring a Trailer from January 1 to October 8, 2026: ZR1 median $247,388 from 7 sales, ZR1X median $402,000 from 5.
- Top speed: 233 mph (ZR1, standard aero); about 225 with the big wing.
The C8 buyer’s guide covers the generation; the Z06 guide, the naturally aspirated 670 hp sibling.

Section 01
What makes a ZR1 and ZR1X different
The LT7 shares the Z06 LT6’s 5.5-liter flat-plane-crank architecture and, per GM’s July 2024 release (opens in new tab), adds parts of its own:
- Engine. Twin 76 mm ball-bearing turbos built into the exhaust manifolds, electronic wastegates, its own ports, pistons and rods, port injection on top of direct injection and an 8-quart dry sump: 1,064 hp at 7,000 rpm, 828 lb-ft at 6,000. Each is hand-assembled in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and GM calls it “the most powerful V8 ever produced in America from an auto manufacturer.”
- No front trunk. The nose holds the radiator and the front heat exchangers of the charge coolers’ own cooling circuit, venting through the hood. Luggage goes in the rear trunk: 9.1 cubic feet, by GM’s ZR1 figure.
- Gearbox. The C8’s eight-speed dual-clutch, coded M1K here, with shot-peened gears and more control valves for a higher clutch clamp load (GM).
- Brakes. Carbon-ceramic on every car: 15.7-inch front and 15.4-inch rear rotors on a standard ZR1. The J59 package (standard on the ZR1X, optional on the ZR1) brings Alcon 10-piston front and six-piston rear calipers on 16.5-inch rotors, which GM calls the largest ever offered on a Corvette.
- Aero and ZTK. The Carbon Fiber Aero package (RPO T0M), $8,495 at the ZR1’s launch, adds the tall wing, dive planes, a hood Gurney lip and underbody strakes: over 1,200 lb of downforce at top speed (GM). The $1,500 ZTK package requires it and adds stiffer springs, retuned dampers and differential, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires in place of Pilot Sport 4S (Road & Track).
- The rest. A visible carbon roof, a split rear window revived from the 1963 Sting Ray coupe, a boost gauge, and Top Speed Mode for closed tracks, which turns off StabiliTrak and traction control but keeps ABS.

What does ZR1 stand for? No GM document read for this guide says. Road & Track traces the name to a 1970–1972 option package, and three Corvettes wore it before this one: the 1990–1995 ZR-1, the 2009–2013 ZR1 and the 2019 ZR1.

| EPA city/highway/combined | 12/18/14 mpg | 12/19/14 mpg |
Whose numbers. GM’s ZR1 times and its 1.89 s ZR1X came on unprepped surfaces; on a prepped strip with standard aero and tires, GM’s January 2026 release (opens in new tab) adds a ZR1X at 1.68 s and an 8.675-second quarter at 159 mph. GM times from “initial vehicle movement”, Car and Driver without the first foot of rollout (0.2 s), so the two aren’t measured the same way. Car and Driver called its retest car “every bit as quick as Chevy claims.”
Top speed. GM announced its 233 mph run in October 2024: a two-way average at ATP Papenburg, Germany, in a ZR1 with the standard spoiler (opens in new tab) and Pilot Sport 4S tires. With the big wing, MotorTrend gives the ZR1 224 mph, and Car and Driver lists a 225 mph claim for its ZR1 and ZR1X. Chevrolet’s ZR1X page also says 233 mph; this guide found no GM run in a ZR1X.
Section 03
ZR1 or ZR1X: what the front motor buys
The ZR1X’s front unit is the E-Ray’s size with stronger internals (GM) and no physical link to the engine; Stealth mode moves the car 4–5 miles on electricity alone at up to 45 mph (Chevrolet). The idea began with the E-Ray; for 2027 the Grand Sport X gets a 186 hp front motor and a battery GM says comes “from the record-setting Corvette ZR1X”.

- Launches. The ZR1X, in every test (see the table in C8 ZR1 and ZR1X specs). MotorTrend’s ZR1X ran 2.1 s to 60 and 9.2 s at 153.3 mph in the quarter, against 2.5 s and 9.9 s at 144.2 mph for a ZR1 whose options it doesn’t list.
- Corners. Closer. MotorTrend’s ZR1 pulled 1.16 g to the ZR1X’s 1.14 and tied the magazine’s figure-eight record at 21.6 s, against 21.9; it found the ZR1X “duller at the helm”. Car and Driver’s skidpad went the other way, 1.15 g to 1.13, results it called essentially identical.
- A lap. The ZR1X, by 1.5 seconds at the Nürburgring (GM, both with ZTK).
- Weight. 308 lb more for the ZR1X coupe, by GM’s dry figures and Car and Driver’s scales alike.
- Money. $30,200 more for a 2027 ZR1X 1LZ coupe, J59 brakes included, with $400 less gas-guzzler tax.
- A battery. The 2026 owner’s manual limits its capacity for the first 100 miles, and owners report new ZR1Xs delivered at 1% and 56% charge. In a November 2025 MidEngineCorvetteForum thread, posters leaning to the ZR1 counted one less battery to nurse through winter storage.
Section 04
Year by year, 2025 to 2027
2025. Production began at the end of April 2025, with unbuilt orders moved to 2026 (Road & Track). The National Corvette Museum counts 180: 115 coupes and 65 convertibles, 83 with ZTK. It’s the only ZR1 with the original C8 cabin. GM stopped deliveries in August 2025 for the refueling recall.
2026. A new cockpit for every Corvette (see the C8 hub), and the ZR1X, built from December 2025. Limited runs: the Quail Silver Limited Edition ZR1X convertible ($241,395 before delivery fees) and the Stars & Steel Edition, 25 ZR1s and 25 ZR1Xs. The owner tracker’s counts run to the end of domestic production on May 29, 2026; export cars were still being built in September, so official totals aren’t out.

2027. Prices rose $12,700 (ZR1) and $17,800 (ZR1X) at GM’s April 2026 announcement (GM Authority), then $300 more in early October. GM’s 2027 announcements read for this guide list no mechanical change.
Section 05
Known ZR1 and ZR1X problems, with the records behind them
The records below stand as of October 12, 2026. Generation-wide ones, such as the dual-clutch’s history, are in the C8 buyer’s guide.
Recalls
- 25V536000 (2025–2026 ZR1). In North America only the Z06 and ZR1 have the left-side radiator involved: fuel spilled while refueling can reach it, and its fan can draw it in as vapor. GM’s report to NHTSA (opens in new tab) covers 23,656 Z06s and ZR1s without splitting them and counts four alleged fires. The fix is a shield; about a third were still open at the end of June 2026. No ZR1X is in the population, which was built before ZR1X production began.
- 26V213000 (2026 ZR1X). Software may miss a failed rear turn-signal lamp. GM lists 90 ZR1Xs among 32,988 Corvettes; its 2025–2026 coupe and convertible groups aren’t split by trim, so check a ZR1’s VIN too. The fix is software, by a dealer or over the air.
GM bulletins and restrictions, none of them a recall
In a restriction, GM’s Technical Assistance Center screens a repair before releasing the part: not a recall, a stop-sale or a finding of a defect. GM gives no failure rates.
- The engine. PIP6089 restricted replacement Z06 and ZR1 engines in October 2025; the July 2026 revision, PIP6089B (opens in new tab), added the ZR1X and 2027 cars. Its stated cause: “Possible Engine Failure”. The dealer must first report whether the old engine is seized, noisy, leaking or has excessive metal in the oil.
- ZR1 parts. Since May 2025 (PIC6605), replacing a ZR1-specific part has needed a Technical Assistance case first. By May 2026 the list was down to the engine and the Carbon Fiber Aero wing (
86509451, GM); the September 2026 version keeps the wing. - Valve bodies. An engineering request, PIE0835 (May 2025), has dealers call GM engineering before replacing a valve body on listed 2025 Corvettes, because GM “is attempting to determine the root cause”. In its own capitals: “THIS IS NOT A RECALL”.
- Smaller items. A transmission fluid-life reading that may drop too fast after a reset (PIP6076A); a 2026 that can flatten its 12-volt battery within a week with Passive Door Lock off (PIC6631); battery-drain reprogramming for listed 2024–2025 cars (N242476670).
The one NHTSA complaint
NHTSA doesn’t file these cars by name, so this site read the VIN engine code (7 for the LT7) on all 14 complaints against 2025–2027 Corvettes as of October 12, 2026. One is an LT7 car, a 2026 ZR1X convertible (ODI 11754412): a third episode of shuddering and lost power with every warning light on, the car unable to move and, in the owner’s words, losing “its ability to brake entirely”, after a dealer had replaced an electric brake module. No crash or injury: one owner, not a pattern.
What owners report
From 32 forum threads read for this guide, mostly about cars with a few thousand miles or less:
- Warning lights. P026E (charge-air cooler pump performance) at 660 miles, cured by reseating a loose coolant fitting; misfire codes at 1,400 miles.
- Valve bodies. Two owners report replacements, at 1,100 miles and under about 100. The 1,100-mile ZR1’s dealer found none in the US; GM quoted late May or early June, then the part came in about 11 days.
- One LT7 failure. One owner’s 2026 ZR1, past 1,900 miles on its first track weekend after break-in, got a new engine, turbos included, under warranty and with no root cause given; the owner was told the job ran “well over $40,000”.
- Leaks and finish. One ZR1X weeping oil at the dry-sump drain plug at 895 miles; peeling or flaking heat-shield paint on three cars; mismatched carbon panels on one ZR1, misaligned panels on another.
- Parts. Mid-2026 holds on the ZTK’s Alcon brakes, the aero package and ZR1X coupes; the front Cup 2R was back-ordered at Tire Rack until at least the end of September 2026.
What isn’t on file
No safety recall for these cars alone, no GM special coverage, no GM bulletin on the turbos, the charge-air cooling or the ZR1X’s front drive unit, no dual-clutch bulletin naming the M1K, no NHTSA defect investigation into any 2020-or-later Corvette (NHTSA’s file to September 21, 2026), and no published failure rate. Too new to call either way.
Section 06
The one-year rule and your warranty
The most expensive fact on this page isn’t mechanical. GM’s 2026 warranty booklet (opens in new tab) reads: “For Corvette ZR1 only: coverage will be voided if ownership of the vehicle is transferred from the original owner within the first year from sale of the vehicle.” Put simply, most of the warranty is void if the first owner sells within a year.
GM’s November 17, 2025 dealer memo, as Corvette Blogger reproduced it, applies the rule to the 2025 ZR1 and the 2026 ZR1 and ZR1X, counting from the day the car is reported delivered to its first retail buyer. It voids Bumper-to-Bumper, Powertrain, Sheet Metal, Electric Vehicle Propulsion (ZR1X only), Tire and Accessory coverage, but not the EV battery coverage, and the loss carries to every later owner; GM confirmed the policy to The Drive. In August 2026 a CorvetteForum poster reported a 3-mile 2026 ZR1 offered at about $280,000 with no warranty when a Chevrolet dealer ran its VIN.
No 2027 booklet or GM statement on 2027 cars turned up by October 12, 2026. Buying new, ask the dealer for the retention form; buying used, assume the rule applies until a dealer confirms the warranty on the VIN. Some Z06s and E-Rays carry a six-month rule instead (see the Z06 and E-Ray guides).
The coverage. Per the 2026 booklet: 3 years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper, 5 years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain (turbochargers included), and a hybrid’s propulsion battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles. It doesn’t spell out the ZR1X’s front drive unit, so ask a dealer to confirm that on the VIN.
Section 07
What to check before buying a ZR1 or ZR1X

- The warranty. Status by VIN at a Chevrolet dealer, and the first owner’s delivery date (see The one-year rule and your warranty).
- The engine code. The VIN’s eighth character is 7 for the LT7, in both cars. Badges can be bought.
- Recalls. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup (opens in new tab), then have a Chevrolet dealer check GM’s programs and repair history. A 2025–2026 ZR1 needs the 25V536000 shield.
- Break-in. The 2025 owner’s manual rules out track events for 1,500 miles and, for the first 500, full-throttle starts and anything over 4,000 rpm, then gives an unlock routine for full torque. A car tracked before 1,500 miles was driven against the manual.
- Transmission records. The canister filter at 7,500 miles, then every 22,500, and fluid and filter at 45,000 miles or three years (2027 owner’s manual); on a track car, both after every 24 hours of track use. GM’s bulletin paying for the first filter lists 2024–2025 Corvettes, and none was found for 2026–2027.
- Codes and a drive. A scan for transmission codes, P026E and misfires, then a drive cold and hot.
- Underneath. No oil at the dry-sump drain plug, and heat-shield paint intact.
- Carbon. Roof, splitter and wing for chips and cracks. A damaged Carbon Fiber Aero wing needs GM’s sign-off before a dealer replaces it (PIC6605C).
- Tires and brakes. Cup 2R age and wear, and the rotors checked by a dealer against GM’s limits (one owner gives 37.5 mm as the minimum thickness).
- ZR1X hybrid. No hybrid warnings, and a battery that charges.
- Insurance. A quote before you bid (see What a ZR1 or ZR1X costs to own).
Section 08
What a ZR1 or ZR1X costs in 2026
New. 2027 prices with destination, from GM Authority (October 5, 2026), matching Chevrolet’s price list archived October 9:
| 2027 model | Coupe | Convertible |
|---|---|---|
| ZR1 1LZ | $197,495 | $207,495 |
| ZR1 3LZ | $208,495 | $218,495 |
| ZR1X 1LZ | $227,695 | $237,695 |
| ZR1X 3LZ | $238,695 | $248,695 |
Add the gas-guzzler tax: $3,000 on a ZR1, $2,600 on a ZR1X. At launch, with destination, the ZR1 was $174,995 (January 2025) and the ZR1X $207,395 (August 2025). Owners reported dealer markups of $50,000–75,000 in early 2025; by August 2026, offers ran from $75,000 over down to allocations at MSRP.
Used. Every ZR1 and ZR1X sold on Bring a Trailer in 2026 had 1,200 miles or fewer, and the samples are thin (sold prices before the buyer’s fee; medians are this site’s arithmetic):
| Bring a Trailer | Sold | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZR1, November–December 2025 | 6 | $285,500 | $266,000–301,000 |
| ZR1, January 1 to October 8, 2026 | 7 | $247,388 | $217,000–320,000 |
| ZR1X, January 1 to October 8, 2026 | 5 | $402,000 | $360,000–452,000 |
Where listings gave the window sticker, ZR1s sold 9.0 to 14.8 percent over it and ZR1Xs (opens in new tab) 38.0 to 55.5 percent over. On October 12 a sixth ZR1X, a 2026 ZTK coupe with 1,200 miles, sold for $315,000, 22.9 percent over its sticker, making the 2026 ZR1X median $383,500 from six. The ZR1’s median fell about $38,000 from late 2025. A record of what sold, from tiny samples, not a forecast.
Section 09
What a ZR1 or ZR1X costs to own
- Fuel. EPA 14 mpg combined, premium required, 93 octane or higher for track use (2025 owner’s manual).
- Fluids. 8.0 quarts of dexos R 5W-50 in the dry sump, and a separate charge-air cooling system (6.6 quarts on a ZR1, 8.0 shared with the hybrid parts on a ZR1X) that the 2025 owner’s manual leaves to a qualified technician.
- Tires and brakes. No dated price turned up for these Cup 2R sizes or the carbon-ceramic rotors: get quotes.
- Insurance. In a September 2026 CorvetteForum thread, owners’ yearly quotes ran from under $1,500 to $8,300, State Farm’s $3,300 on a 2026 ZR1 with ZTK among them, and some insurers wouldn’t take the car. Single quotes, not a survey.
- Out of warranty. A forum poster quoted GM’s parts price for an LT7 long block in May 2026: $22,353.97, plus a $10,000 core charge. That’s what the one-year rule puts at stake.
- Storage. A C8 that sits needs a battery maintainer.
Section 10
The verdict
Car and Driver on its ZR1: “Even at $205,000, the Corvette remains an unparalleled performance bargain.” GM’s launch table set the ZR1’s $173,300 base price before destination against $241,300 for a 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and $608,358 for a 2025 Lamborghini Revuelto (GM’s figures). America’s sports car has always sold speed by the dollar; this is that deal with four digits of horsepower.
For the track, the ZR1 with ZTK: rear-drive, about 300 lb lighter than a ZR1X, better on MotorTrend’s figure eight and $30,200 cheaper new. Picture the long straight at Road America, where GM’s engineers lapped a pre-production ZR1 in 2:08.6: by the braking zone, the car you passed is a speck in the mirror. For launches, wet roads and a 1.8-second car, the ZR1X.
New, expect a retention form and plan to keep the car a year. Used, buy from a first owner past that year, with the warranty confirmed on the VIN, the break-in done by the book and the transmission receipts in hand. The budget path is one step down: the 670 hp Z06, 21 seconds slower than a ZR1 around GM’s Nürburgring laps (both in track trim), from $121,695 for a 2027 1LZ with destination, or a $116,156 median from 36 Bring a Trailer sales in 2026 to October 8.
Walk away from a car resold inside its first year unless the price assumes no warranty, from one tracked before 1,500 miles, and from a 2025–2026 ZR1 without the refueling shield. Clear all three, and four-digit horsepower comes with its factory warranty intact. Book the first track day for mile 1,501.
